In the lead-up to a historic election, the India Currents team worked around the clock to produce Desis On The Ballot, an exhaustive series that introduced readers to 21 South Asian candidates running for office in Bay Area cities.? For most of them, this was their first run for office, and they mounted spirited campaigns to reach voters and make their voices heard. As the dust settles around the elections, we still await definitive results on a few races, but many have already been called.?? Win or lose, running for office is a novel experience that most of us don’t get to experience. India Currents decided to put together some of the candidates’ reflections on their campaigns, and their aspirations for the future. Read here -

From experiencing “low-grade immigrant anxiety” to dealing with death, Nishanth Injam’s debut book, The Best Possible Experience, a collection of 11 short stories, packs an emotional punch. In an interview, Injam tells India Currents how his book comes from a place of longing for India, his emotional struggle to feel at home in the U.S., and how, if he got a do-over, he would probably not make the trip from India to America. A big thank you to Vasudha Badri-Paul for inviting me to the "Responsible Innovation in AI" conference! It was a great opportunity to hear from thought leaders in the health and education sectors about their innovative efforts to shape the future of ethical AI development and deployment. It was also a pleasure meeting leaders like Anuradha Basu, Professor of Entrepreneurship at SJSU, and Rangapriya (Priya) Kannan – two inspiring professionals making great strides in their fields! Looking forward to continued discussions as we all work toward a future where AI serves humanity in responsible and impactful ways. ???? #AI #ResponsibleInnovation #EthicalAI #HealthTech #EdTech #Leadership #AIforGood #indiacurrents

“Dictators are pretty good for landscaping and gardens,” quipped Shehan Karunatilaka, in conversation with Sharika Thiranagama at the South Asian Art and Literature Festival on Sept. 29. Karunatilaka is the winner of the 2022 Booker Prize for his novel The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, a satire set in 1990 in Sri Lanka during a Civil War that rocked the country and affected it for years. Calling The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida a book of mourning, and a very tender loving book about how we treat our dead, Thiranagama said “We have all these ghosts,” she said, “we carry on.” Read full story -

The ideal glucose range should be: 70-140 over a 24-hour window. After a meal: Maximum glucose level (140 or below, ideally). If you’re shooting above that by a lot, you might look at the foods you’re eating before that spike, both what the foods are and how much of them you’re eating. You want your glucose levels to recover within 2-3 hours of eating. Based on her experience with monitoring her sugar levels, Mona Shah shares some recipes that ensure your glucose remains stable and rises only slightly after meals. Read here -

If future worlds only know that we had the means to address climate change but failed to do so, that would be a terrible epitaph to write for our time, cautioned Bill McKibben, founder of Third Act, at an Ethnic Media Services briefing focused on the consequences of climate change and its relevance in the election. “The next president of the states will take office in January of 2029 after this election. So in many ways, this is the last election that deeply and powerfully counts for what you know how hot the planet ends up being.” Climate change largely slipped off the radar for both voters and candidates in this election cycle. It was rated second to last in a recent Gallup poll with just 21% of voters calling it “extremely important." Read more -
