Big changes are coming to Market Square! The highly anticipated modernization of one of Pittsburgh's most iconic and heavily trafficked public spaces has recently been approved, marking a major milestone in the collective efforts to revitalize Downtown, and serving as a key component of our 2025-2028 Strategic Vision. The project includes infrastructure improvements, upgraded pedestrian pathways, enhanced lighting, expanded public seating areas, and a new central pavilion structure. The PDP is overseeing the design and construction, which is expected to begin on April 1, 2025, with re-opening slated for April 2026—just in time to welcome visitors for the NFL Draft. Market Square embodies the bustling heart of Downtown, and these improvements will create a more vibrant, accessible, and connected urban civic center that better serves residents, businesses, and visitors for decades to come. Funding for the construction is generously provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, BNY, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, Dollar Bank, Federated Hermes, Highmark Inc., K&L Gates, PITT OHIO, PNC, PPG, Reed Smith LLP, and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, with additional supporters expected. Work is underway to create a true neighborhood in downtown Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is turning the 8th Street Block in the Cultural District into a new civic space, Arts Landing. This project is part of our work with downtown stakeholders, Allegheny County, City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Conference on Community Development, and Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh to reimagine and revitalize downtown, a project made possible through Gov. Josh Shapiro's $600 million investment and private and philanthropic commitments.
