  • Today in U.S. History: On March 24, 1832, Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), also known as Mormonism, was tarred and feathered by an angry mob in Hiram, OH. Why? It depends on who you ask. Some say the locals were outraged by Smith's shady banking and property schemes, by LDS consolidation of political power, and by the Church's outspoken endorsement of polygamy. Some further allege that the (multiply) married Smith had had an inappropriate relationship with 16-year old Nancy Marinda Johnson, incurring the wrath of her kin. The LDS Church maintains that the mob attacked Smith with no provocation, and that Smith and the Mormons were persecuted for their beliefs, rather than angering people with their actions, everywhere they went. In any event, Nancy Marinda Johnson married Smith in 1842, becoming his tenth wife. He would go on to marry many more women after that, though historians still debate the exact number.

It's Women's History Month! Women have served on board U.S. Navy vessels since 1862, when nuns from the Sisters of the Holy Cross supported the medical staff aboard the USS ?????? ??????????, the Navy's first hospital ship. As noted yesterday, nursing was then a male profession and the ?????? ?????????? had a regular corps of nurses on board, all male. The assistance of the Sisters was, according to the U.S. Naval Institute, gratefully accepted. Women soon became more prominent in nursing, and the Navy Nurse Corps was established in 1908, with Esther Hanson as Superintendent. We honor the many women who have served with and in the U.S. Navy and the other branches of the armed forces, from the Civil War up until today.

  • Today in U.S. History: On March 18, 1766, the British Parliament repealed the Stamp Act just a year after it was instituted. The Stamp Act was imposed in 1765 to pay the massive war debt Britain had acquired through the Seven Years War. American Colonists were charged duties on every official document they used. Any deed, contract, or marriage license was required by law to be processed on paper bearing the official stamp of the British Empire, as well as a tax. Britain's collecting taxes from the American colonists to pay its war debts outraged the Americans, but it was not entirely unreasonable. The Seven Years War was an international conflict, manifested in North America as the French and Indian War. George Washington served the British crown against the French in that conflict, where Britain spent a fortune securing the interests of its American colonies. It now expected the colonists to help foot the huge bill. The colonists didn't see it that way, and reacted by instituting massive boycotts of British goods. Rather than helping pay down its debt, the Stamp Act instead dramatically reduced British revenue. https://lnkd.in/e3NKD-uw

  • Today in U.S. History: On March 17, 1966, the crew of the U.S. Navy submarine ?????????? experienced the luck of the Irish when they finally found what the Navy had been desperately seeking for the previous several months: a 1.45 megaton hydrogen bomb. In mid-January, a B-52G bomber collided with a KC-135 tanker during mid-air refueling over the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Spain. The fuel ignited, destroying the KC-135 and killing all four crew members. Three of the seven crew on the B-52G were killed. Four survived, but all four of the thermonuclear bombs on board were lost. Two of the weapons exploded on impact, dispersing radioactive material over about a square mile of coastal Spain. (Nuclear weapons contain conventional explosives to initiate the intended nuclear chain reaction under precise circumstances, but these explosions instead dispersed plutonium, causing contamination but no explosive nuclear reaction). One weapon was recovered intact. The other remained unaccounted for until discovered at the bottom of the Mediterranean. ??????????, the extraordinary submersible vessel that located and recovered the bomb, has had a long and storied career. After an accident south of Nantucket island in 1968, ?????????? sank to the bottom of the Atlantic, plummeting to a depth of 5,000 feet. The vehicle was recovered from the ocean floor, refitted, and went on to participate in many important scientific and recovery missions, including exploring the wreckage of the ??????????????.

  • We are excited to launch a new resource: Women’s Lives/American History Time Traveler. This video series has been designed by students, for students, and for teachers who want to motivate middle school, high school, and college learners to do their own Women’s History research, to write their own reports and to make their own Women’s History videos. In the Women’s Lives/American History Time Traveler videos, students have been paired with distinguished authors and historians, specializing in the history of American women in law, medicine, psychology and sports. Today we feature Kailynn, and her career in medicine. • It's Philadelphia Fact Friday! (and it's Women's History Month!) When the United States entered the Second World War, it had the advantage of a large population and an enormous industrial production potential, but was well behind Germany and Japan in actual war supplies. While young men in the millions were deployed to Europe and the Pacific to battle totalitarianism and fascism, back home stateside, the nation geared up to produce the planes, jeeps, guns and uniforms those brave soldiers needed. With so many able-bodied men doing the actual fighting, women were employed in unprecedented numbers in wartime production. Most famously embodied by "Rosie the Riveter," these women were essential to the defeat of the Axis powers. In Philadelphia, many women were employed at the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot. This image depicts women sewing sleeves onto army overcoats at a Philadelphia quartermaster facility in 1942. Rosie's motto was "We can do it!" And with Rosie's help, we did.
