关于我们
The Maryland Coalition for Inclusive Education, Inc. (MCIE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the inclusion of students with disabilities in their neighborhood schools. Our mission is to be the catalyst for meaningful and successful participation of all students in their neighborhood schools. MCIE has a vision of a society where neighborhood schools welcome all students, engage them in learning, and form the foundation for inclusive communities. We envision that in neighborhood schools, students with disabilities will benefit from meaningful instruction, have friends, and be full members of their school communities.

At Changing Perspectives, we remain committed to equity, access, and inclusion. Children with disabilities are getting swept up in the Trump administration’s crusade against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and its push to end the Education Department, advocates say. (The Hill) Tim Villegas spoke with reporter Lexi Lonas last week. *** “We are concerned, because while the administration may not be targeting students with disabilities, students with disabilities have other identities, including transgender, LGBTQ+, all these identities are wrap into all these different students. While they may be focused on woke ideology and DEI, students with disabilities are affected,” said Tim Villegas, director of communications for the Maryland Coalition of Inclusive Education. *** Linda McMahon, Trump’s pick for Education secretary, said during her confirmation hearing she would be looking to put IDEA under the authority of the Health and Human Services Department if the Education Department was abolished, as both she and Trump hope it will be. “You have a law that was supposed to be working in tandem with education, with the Education Department, and now it’s being possibly moved to Health and Human Services, where the main function of that department is public health. So, I’m concerned that the focus and kind of the view of students with disabilities is that we’re really only talking about medical issues,” said Villegas. “We really should be talking about; how do we educate these learners? The whole purpose of IDEA is to give supports and special education services to students with disabilities […] So, if you separate those, if you separate those departments, then you already have a siloed way of thinking,” he added. Hey everyone! It's Tim from MCIE, and I've got something really exciting to share with you today. ??? We've just released a brand-new episode of Think Inclusive. This time, we're diving into the world of peer tutoring, an underutilized key to implementing inclusive education. Trust me, you don't want to miss this one! Key Takeaways: ?? The research base is strong, but peer tutoring remains underutilized in schools. ?? Structured peer support systems are not the same as peer buddy programs. ?? Peer tutoring structures should be implemented within schools that are already practicing inclusive education. I had the pleasure of chatting with Rebecca Brooks, an Associate Professor at California State University, San Marcos. She breaks down how peer tutoring isn't just about one-on-one support; it's about creating a dynamic, inclusive school system where learners with disabilities get the support they need. Rebecca really drives home the importance of having a formal system in place. Schools need to offer opportunities for all students to become peer tutors, making sure everyone gets a chance to be involved. It's all about building a more inclusive and supportive school environment. The impact of peer tutoring is huge. It fosters a culture of inclusion and helps students form genuine friendships (though that is not the only goal). Rebecca shared some amazing stories about tutors who went on to become special education teachers themselves and even kept up with friends they made while tutoring. So, grab your headphones and tune in to this insightful episode. Let's explore how peer tutoring can be a key to implementing inclusive education. Think Inclusive is streaming on Facebook, YouTube, Spotify and on all major podcast platforms (link in comments). #ThinkInclusive #PeerTutoring #InclusiveEducation #DiversityEquityInclusion #Podcast And hey, I'd love to hear your thoughts or experiences with peer tutoring.
