UChicago Inclusive Economy Lab

In the past couple of weeks, it's been helpful to offer gratitude to others and celebrate those who are actively building alternatives now in preparation for a new way of being in the future. The folks I've had the pleasure of working with on the City's guaranteed income pilots fall into this camp. They worked tirelessly to design something completely new from the ground up and to keep it as user-friendly and respectful of people's agency throughout. We previously published an interim version of this process evaluation but have now completed the full report, which contains additional information about GiveDirectly's ongoing program administration and how it partnered with the City to offboard participants as the pilot ended. Also included are quotes from participants that capture their level of satisfaction with the program. I hope you can take a moment with me to appreciate the pilot's innovation and impact. Congratulations to IEL affiliates Elizabeth Rhodes at OpenResearch, Sarah Miller, Eva Vivalt, and Alex Bartik for releasing the initial findings from the OpenResearch Unconditional income Study! IEL has supported this pilot since 2018 and have benefited from OR's leadership on conducting rigorous, mixed-methods, and large-scale evaluations on cash assistance programs. Thank you to everyone who came out a few weeks ago to help UChicago Inclusive Economy Lab launch its first PhotoVoice exhibit at the Harold Washington Library! The pictures in this exhibit were taken by participants in Chicago's first round of guaranteed income and capture the impact of the program's 12 monthly payments of $500/month. At Harris, students and faculty work on innovative policy measures that reimagine the ways we work toward a more equitable world.
