  • Just over a year ago, @The World Bank Group President Ajay Banga apologized to survivors of child sexual abuse at Bridge International Academies, acknowledging “the trauma they experienced” at the World Bank-funded schools. His statement came in response to a bombshell report from @Ryan Grim and @Neha Wadekar at @The Intercept, and amid calls for accountability from Inclusive Development International, @Accountability Counsel and others.? President Banga promised: ? A “remediation program” designed “with input from survivors." ? An “external review” of allegations that World Bank Group staff colluded with the schools' management to cover up reports of abuse when they came to light and obstruct the investigation underway by the Office of the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO). But, one year on: ? ?????????????????? ???????? ???????????????? ???? ???????????? ???? ????????????. Rather than address the particular needs of Bridge survivors, the “remediation program” is being designed as a public good community-wide program to provide services for abuse survivors in the districts where Bridge operated. ? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ???????????????????????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????? ??????????-???? ?????????????? ???? ?????????? ???????? ?????????? ??????????. A short press statement earlier this month reporting the results of the external review leaves key questions unanswered and proposes no concrete reforms. 1.?????????????? ?????????????????? ???????????? ???? ???????? ?????? ?????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????? ???????????? ?????????? ???? ???????????? ??????????????. Their needs are modest and the Bank Group should provide a way to address them before spending more money on expensive project design consultants. 2. ?????????????? ?????? ???????? ?????????????????????????? ????????????. Otherwise, we and other stakeholders will continue to question their commitment to accountability and responsible investment. • We are thrilled to introduce ESG Watch (https://www.esgwatch.net), our new online database tracking $39 billion in environmental, social and governance (ESG)-focused investment flowing to companies that are linked to serious social and environmental harm. Truly responsible investing can be a powerful incentive for corporate accountability, but many ESG-labeled and other investment products marketed as ethical and sustainable are falling short. We created ESG Watch as a platform to amplify the voices of communities affected by harmful corporate activities, and to hold financial services firms and investors accountable for fulfilling their human rights responsibilities. Do you have information on a company that should be added to the database? Get in touch: https://lnkd.in/gbfdYeFu #ESG #CorporateAccountability #SRI #ResponsibleInvesting

  • The verdict in the Energy Transfer vs. Greenpeace trial is an egregious miscarriage of justice and assault on the constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful assembly in the United States. We stand in solidarity with Greenpeace and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, whose sovereignty and right to self-determination were also assaulted by this ruling. We support Greenpeace in their fight to appeal this wrongful verdict and stop oil companies from silencing human rights and environmental defenders and advocates, especially as national attacks on our First Amendment rights grow. Inclusive Development International will not be silenced by unlawful SLAPP suits, either. Even in the face of intimidation, we are committed to speaking out and holding corporations accountable in the defense of people and the planet. #StandWithGreenpeace #WeWillNotBeSilenced

  • Tenacity has always been at the core of Inclusive Development International’s approach: We accompany our community partners for the long haul, and we refuse to let companies off the hook until justice is delivered. It works. We are thrilled to share our 2023-2024 Impact Report: The Power of Persistence, which provides a snapshot of what our team has achieved over the last two years—from accompanying displaced communities to secure a historic remedial agreement with one of the world’s largest gold mining companies, to building a global “Follow the Money” community of practice. We are immensely grateful for all of our supporters and our partners on the frontlines of the fight for a just and inclusive global economy, without whom none of these achievements would have been possible. ?? IWGIA condemns the arrest of Ringrong Mro, a key leader fighting for Indigenous land rights in Lama, Bandarban. His detention is seen as retaliation for his activism against illegal land grabs by Lama Rubber Industries. We strongly call on authorities to ensure that those responsible for human rights violations are held accountable, and to cease their assaults on activists like Ringrong and other land defenders and withdraw false charges. Justice for Indigenous communities! ?? Read more: https://bit.ly/4gULeoz #FreeRingrongMro #LandRights #CHT #Indigenous #IndigenousPeoples #Bangladesh ????

Today, the trial begins. Energy Transfer, the Big Oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is suing Greenpeace USA for $300 million in an abusive lawsuit attempting to silence free speech through intimidation. In 2016, #Indigenous leaders organized the #NoDAPL resistance at Standing Rock against the DAPL oil pipeline that would harm their land, water and rights. Climate activists, and allies joined in support. This abusive lawsuit is an attack on all of our rights to protest and free speech. Join us in standing up to #BigOilBullies Let’s show them that #WeWillNotBeSilenced or stop speaking up against harm. Learn more ?? GreenpeaceOnTrial.org

The fight for environmental justice often means taking on big polluters—and winning. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re honoring those who refused to stay silent starting with Margie Richard, who is known for her work holding Shell accountable. ???? Margie Richard took on Shell’s petrochemical pollution in Norco, Louisiana—and won. Her activism forced the company into a landmark relocation agreement, protecting her community from toxic air. ????? ???QUICK UPDATES! 1. The case against 15 youth activists arrested on November 11 2024, has been dismissed! They were protesting the controversial #EACOP pipeline & pushing for #RenewableEnergy 2. Tomorrow, February 20th, the court will hear the case of the 20 protestors arrested on August 26th 2024. Among the 20 protestors are seven EACOP-Project Affected Persons (PAPs). Their alleged offence? Delivering a petition to Uganda's Ministry of Energy documenting the project's negative impacts on their communities. Environmental and human rights defenders increasingly face criminal charges for standing up to influential project proponents and their governments. TotalEnergies and CNOOC International's EACOP project is marred in numerous human rights violations as documented by independent international bodies, including Human Rights Watch. We must keep exposing these injustices and calling for sustainable development projects that do not put profits over people, climate, and the environment. #StopEACOP

Despite their limited freedom, Myanmar’s journalists—many now living in exile—continue to document the hidden costs of the country's brutal civil war: from deforested hills to poisoned rivers, from displaced communities to the erosion of local conservation efforts. To mark their dedication in extremely difficult circumstances, the Mekong Eye team has compiled their reports and investigations that illustrate the environmental consequences of conflict, as well as the resilience of those who remain committed to protecting their homeland: https://loom.ly/XwXpO3o #Myanmar #CivilWar #PressFreedom #EnvironmentalCrisis #Deforestation #WildlifeTrafficking #HumanRights #ClimateJustice #ConflictImpact #MekongRegion #EnvironmentalReporting
