This week, the US army released an article warning of the “kissing bug”, an insect known for carrying the parasite that causes #Chagas disease. “Diagnosing Chagas disease can be challenging, as symptoms may not appear for years or even decades, and treatment must occur before that happens,” a Defense Health Agency entomologist warns. InBios has developed an FDA-cleared Chagas rapid test kit that offers fast results in 20 minutes. Researchers have recently discovered a new type of coronavirus found in bats, HKU5-CoV-2. While the new virus can enter cells in a similar way to the virus that causes COVID-19, researchers warn that “risk of emergence in human populations should not be exaggerated,” as HKU5-CoV-2 did not infect human cells as readily as SARS-CoV-2. New MMWR report describes a serosurvey by public health officials to assess past exposure to H5 bird flu among 150 bovine veterinary practitioners. The results showed three participants (2%) had evidence of antibodies to H5 bird flu, suggesting recent infection. Two reported no exposures to animals with known or suspected bird flu illness, and one practiced in states with no known H5 virus-infected cattle. More here: https://bit.ly/mm7404a2
