Amygdala The?amygdala?is a key part of the brain responsible for processing fear, aggression, and emotional memory.??????There are two amygdalae, one in each hemisphere, located deep within the temporal lobes. Research has shown that when the amygdala is damaged, aggressive animals can become passive or even fearful. This tiny structure plays a crucial role in how we react to threats and emotionally charged experiences. #PsychologicalTermsWithInari #Amygdala #EmotionalMemory #BrainScience #Fear #Aggression What psychological terms would you like us to explore next? ?? Do your decisions rest on?cold logic or heated emotions? Most likely, they rely on both. #WeekendReadWithBen
Philosophy & Psychology with Ben: Your Weekend Read – Emotional Decision-Making #WeekendReadWithBen #CognitiveNeuroscience #EmotionsAndLogic ?? Do your decisions rest on?cold logic or heated emotions? Most likely, they rely on both. In the late 1970s,?Antonio Damasio (b. 1961)?made a striking observation while studying patients with brain damage. He noticed that individuals with otherwise intact cognitive functions?struggled to make decisions?when certain areas of their brains were impaired. One case stood out: a patient spent?half an hour?agonising over the most suitable time for his next appointment—until Damasio finally stepped in and scheduled it for him. This difficulty in making even simple choices led Damasio to a profound conclusion: the?affected brain regions were crucial for linking emotions with knowledge and logic. Since emotions are often?experienced through bodily reactions, Damasio developed what he called the?Somatic Marker Hypothesis. According to this theory, the?prefrontal cortex?plays a key role in storing emotional experiences and?guiding decision-making. Damasio’s findings were supported by experiments: when patients with prefrontal damage were shown highly emotional images—such as?disturbing injuries or intimate moments—their?heart rates and physiological responses remained unchanged. In contrast, individuals with healthy brain function displayed clear physiological reactions. Moreover, these patients failed to perform well in?simple gambling tasks, losing all their money despite having the logical ability to understand the rules. Damasio’s work suggests that?good decisions are not purely logical—they are also emotional. The brain uses?stored emotional experiences?to steer us away from poor choices and towards better ones, a process essential for adaptive decision-making in daily life. ?? This concept is closely related to?Evolutionary Psychology?(discussed in December 2024),?Ekman’s Basic Emotions(featured in early January 2025), and the?Prospect Theory of Decision-Making?(coming in approximately six weeks). ?? Prefrontal Cortex The?prefrontal cortex?is the foremost part of the brain, located in the frontal lobe.????It plays a crucial role in shaping personality, making moral judgments, and regulating impulses, including sexual urges. Learn about social dreaming in Andrea Bell (EMC) text and sign up for the upcoming spring equinox social dreaming matrix on March 22nd. More in the post below ??
???Rethinking how we dream, lead, and connect On?November 7, 2024, almost 4 months ago, Andrea Bell (EMC) wrote a compelling piece on?Social Dreaming—a practice that remains as urgent today as ever. In a recent matrix with fellow INSEAD EMC and ICC alumni, led by Susan Long, we explored dreams not as personal symbols, but as glimpses into our collective unconscious. What surfaced? A world wrestling with imbalance—light struggling to emerge from shadow, leadership narratives shaped by disconnection, and a longing for?deeper, more lasting human connections. ???What if Social Dreaming could help us see anew??Could it reveal the patterns we unconsciously recreate in leadership, work, and private life? Andrea’s article reminds us that we need to?change how we look at life, work, and relationships, embracing transformation rather than retreating into the familiar grey. This was also deeply reflected in?Inari - Coaching & Social Dreaming’s Midwinter Social Dreaming matrix 2024, where themes of?hope, renewal, and resilience?emerged—images of?journeys, gardens, warmth, and fresh-baked bread?reminded us that even in the darkest moments, light and connection remain. The journey continues.?The 2025?Equinox-Solstice Social Dreaming series?is now open for registration. Join us as we explore the depths of our shared unconscious across the seasons. ???Read Andrea’s article, reflect, and join the conversation: https://lnkd.in/epyzBs_y How can?Social Dreaming?help us build a more connected, conscious world? #SocialDreaming #Leadership #CollectiveUnconscious #Transformation #INSEAD #Connection #EquinoxSolsticeSeries #Change

Cold State (Opposite of Hot State) A?cold state?refers to a calm, unemotional state, in contrast to a?hot state, where our passions and impulses take over. The term originates from research by George Loewenstein and was further explored by Loran Nordgren and others in the context of?hot-cold empathy gaps. Loewenstein found that people in a?cold?state struggle to predict their behaviour when they are in a?hot?state of heightened emotion. ???? For example, Loewenstein studied young men and observed that, when calm, they often underestimate the likelihood of engaging in risky sexual behaviour in the heat of the moment. This highlights the difficulty of making rational decisions under strong emotional or physical arousal. #PsychologicalTermsWithInari #HotColdStates #Emotional #Decision #SelfControl #BehaviouralPsychology What psychological terms would you like us to explore next? A Festival of Animated Dreams – Submissions Open for 2025 #Dreams whisper truths we often overlook—visions of #nature, the shifting tides of our world, and the fragile #balance between humanity and the #environment. Now, there is a place where these dreams can take form, where the #unconscious finds expression through animation. The world’s first film festival dedicated to animated dreams is accepting submissions. If you have ever woken with a dream that lingered—a dream of rising waters, wild landscapes, or the untamed forces of nature—this is your #invitation to bring it to life. How to participate: ? Choose a real dream—one that touches on themes of climate, nature, or our #relationship with the world. ? Create a short #animation (up to 90 seconds) that tells its story. ? Write a brief description of the dream—when you had it and what it meant to you. ? Submit via FilmFreeway by April 30, 2025. All styles and techniques are welcome—traditional, digital, experimental, even AI-assisted, as long as the creative process is transparent. Why it matters: Dreams tap into something beyond the #individual—they reveal #patterns, #anxieties, and #insights that connect us all. At a time when the world stands at a crossroads, could our dreams be showing us a path forward? Selected films will be screened in May 2025, with three winners announced after the final showcase. At Inari, we explore the unconscious through dreams, symbols, and deep reflection. This festival offers a unique way to engage with those ideas—through moving images, shared stories, and creative expression. Are you ready to bring your dream into the light? #Dreams #Animation #FilmFestival #CollectiveUnconscious #Storytelling #ClimateChange Learn more about it: https://lnkd.in/esSu92Dz
