An Important Milestone for #QuantumComputing ?? - we are now below the quantum error threshold, which brings quantum computing one (major) step closer to reality. ?? Quantum Error Correction (QEC) has been a theory and roadblock for scalable quantum computing until now. Simplistically speaking, bits are 0 or 1. Qubits can be 0 and 1 simultaneously due to superposition, which allows qubits to exist in multiple states at once, providing a massive potential for parallelism. However, unlike classic computing states that are robust, errors are local, definite, and easy to identify, and quantum states are extremely fragile. Decoherence (a quantum system loses its superposition and entanglement, or random fluctuations (quantum noise) affect the state of a qubit and introduce errors in quantum computation. Due to the nature of multiple states and non-local (entanglement), quantum computing errors are difficult to identify and correct. But the team at Google, Qinghua University, and IBM all have made progress in QEC. The following paper by the Google team states that they implement a 101-qubit surface code; each time they increase the distance by two, the logical error rate is cut in half!
