"OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY IS A QUESTION OF ATTITUDE" In this interview, Felix Akeret, Global Head Safety at Implenia, explains why safety is not just a duty for a leading construction and real estate services provider, but an attitude, and how management and each individual can help to minimize safety risks - every day, in every workplace. ?What does safety mean for Implenia? ??Felix Akeret:?For us, safety means ensuring that nobody suffers physical or psychological harm as a result of our work and our activities. On the construction site, we like to say: You go home the way you came. At the same time, we must never forget that we also have to protect third parties who could be harmed as a result of our activities. ?How do you create safety? ??There is never 100% safety. Safety always means striking a balance between the risk you are willing to accept and the extent of the measures you want to take to make construction sites and other workplaces safe - in line with the company's requirements. This also means that safety is always about considerations. ?Where do these considerations play an important role? ??In the construction industry, certain considerations are already determined by legislation, such as the obligation to wear helmets on construction sites. At Implenia, we make additional considerations at an organizational level and in the workplace. For the entire organization, for example, we have stipulated that safety shoes of protection class S3 are worn on our construction sites - although this is not required by law, or that eye protection must be worn during concreting work. At the workplace itself, it is usually the supervisors, such as site managers or project managers, who weigh up whether the measures taken and the risks are in balance before the work begins. Their safety specialists are there to advise whenever needed. PIONEERING SOLAR TECHNOLOGY FOR CONSTRUCTION SITES On the barrack rooftops on Implenia Norway’s complex infrastructure projects, over 1000 solar panels gleam in the sunlight. With their self-developed modular and portable solar power system, Implenia Norway are pioneers in the construction industry – lowering both emissions and cost. The panels provide the barracks with all the power they need for daily operations, such as cooling, heating, showers and cooking. At the E03 Rogfast and Tangenvika projects, solar panels also provide electricity for electric vehicles. "By developing our own wooden fixtures, we have made a flexible modular system which can be applied to all our projects. Power cabinets are detached from barracks and can easily be removed. All this makes it easy and cost-efficient to adapt our use as the project evolves and reuse solar panels at other projects," says Head of electrical at Implenia Norway, Lars Rise.
