On 20 November 1945, the first of multiple trials began in Nuremberg, Germany. Under the newly formed International Military Tribunal, 22 representatives of the defeated Nazi Germany stood trial for war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes against the peace. Among the most notorious trials of the 20th century, the Nuremberg Trials marked the first time in history that international leaders had tried another nation for war crimes. Several emerging technological innovations were introduced at Nuremberg. Among the first trials to be filmed, the Nuremberg Trials were also the first to extensively employ film as prosecuting evidence. This week’s #IWMFilm clip, from The Nazi Plan, details the compilation of these evidence films. On 11 November 1920, King George V led the procession of the Unknown Warrior, the coffin of an unidentified member of the British Imperial armed forces, from the Cenotaph to his final resting place at Westminster Abbey. This procession commemorated the end of the First World War, initiating the enduring Remembrance tradition. Today, Remembrance Day serves to commemorate the sacrifice of all British servicepeople who have died in conflict, from the First World War to the present day. The Berlin Wall, formally erected in 1961, stood for nearly 3 decades as a stark symbol of the ideological divide of the Cold War era. 9 November marks 35 years since its fall in 1989. After it fell, countless people made their way to the Wall with pickaxes and sledgehammers. These ‘Mauerspechte’, literally ‘wall woodpeckers’, chipped away at the Wall to retrieve souvenirs from the monument that epitomised the conflict. UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, celebrated on 27 October, acknowledges the importance of preserving audiovisual documents that encompass invaluable heritage and affirm our collective memory. This clip is taken from the first feature-length documentary film record of combat, The Battle of the Somme (1916). To mark its global significance as a historical document, the film was inscribed on UNESCO’s ‘Memory of the World’ register in 2005. Released during the First World War, The Battle of the Somme was widely seen across allied and neutral territories. ? The Battle of the Somme played a major role in the contemporary understanding of the conflict, altering public perceptions of warfare, cinema and film. Its imagery has subsequently shaped our global vision of conflict and coloured our understanding of British participation on the Western Front. ? During the Second World War rationing of clothing was introduced to ensure equal availability for all to scarce resources. This week’s #IWMFilm clip is taken from a newsreel trailer, made by the?Ministry of Information in 1943, called ‘Make Do and Mend’. It formed part of the British Government's campaign to encourage people to revive and repair worn-out clothes to save materials, reduce production and free up factory space. Handmade and hand-repaired clothing was an essential part of wartime life and creativity was necessary to give garments a new lease of life. ? On 14 October 1962 American reconnaissance captured photographic evidence of several Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. The two weeks that followed, known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, marked the closest point the world has ever come to full-scale nuclear war. After a series of negotiations between American President John F Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, the crisis was de-escalated. The resulting agreement led to the removal of Soviet missiles in Cuba and American missiles in Turkey. This week's #IWMFilm clip, taken from Europe - Two Decades (1969), features a combination of black and white and colour footage to highlight this defining event of the Cold War.
