In many ways, their story mirrors the journeys of the community members it has served for the past six years. This week, we are honoring Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree. After graduating from the New England Female Medical College in 1864, Dr. Crumpler moved to Richmond, VA in 1865, after the Civil War ended and dedicated her career to providing medical care for newly freed enslaved people. Although she faced intense racism while working in the South, she persisted in her mission to improve public health and authored A Book of Medical Discourses, one of the first medical publications by a Black author. Dr. Crumpler's legacy paved the way for generations of Black women in medicine, proving that determination and compassion can transform healthcare.
