Uniting researchers and clinicians to understand, predict, prevent and cure Type 1 Diabetes

关于我们

The Immunology of Diabetes Society (IDS) is a scientific network of researchers and clinicians, dedicated to understand, predict, prevent and cure type 1 diabetes. Every 18 months, IDS organizes a conference in Europe, North America or Asia/Oceania to unite key players in the T1D field. The major goal of the conference is to bring together basic and translational scientists, pharmaceutical companies and foundations interested in T1D, to share their latest achievements, discuss new developments on mechanisms by which the immune system and pancreas contribute to the development of T1D, and how these new insights can lead to better prediction, prevention and eventually cure of T1D. The upcoming 20th IDS conference will take place in the old city of Bruges, between November 4-8, hosted by Prof. Chantal Mathieu and Dr. Lut Overbergh from KU Leuven (Belgium). IDS President: Carmella Evans-Molina IDS Council: Anette Ziegler, Sally Kent, Dirk Homann, Peter Achenbach, Sylvaine You, Emma Hamilton-Williams, Emily K. Sims, Alice Long, Lut Overbergh Local organizing committee: Chantal Mathieu, Lut Overbergh, Conny Gysemans, Decio L. Eizirik, Roberto Mallone, Sylvaine You

IDS Congress Day 5: Closing a Transformative Week As we reach the final day of the 20th IDS Congress, attendees can look forward to a compelling program that brings together the week’s insights and looks ahead to the future of T1D research. The day opens with Plenary 5, where Jeffrey Bluestone, a pioneer in immunology and co-founder of teplizumab, will delve into the role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in T1D. Bluestone’s groundbreaking work on immune tolerance and T cell modulation has been instrumental in developing therapies that preserve beta cell function, including the landmark teplizumab, which has reshaped how we think about delaying T1D onset. Following this, Session 12 will explore unconventional contributors to T1D, with presentations on everything from tissue transcriptional signatures to innovative macrophage reprogramming strategies. These sessions promise to introduce new approaches that challenge traditional perspectives on T1D pathogenesis and treatment. A highlight of the day is the Roundtable: To Screen or Not to Screen?, where top experts like Simon Griffin, Anette Ziegler, and Kristine Bell will engage in a lively discussion on the complexities and potential of T1D screening. This discussion will provide attendees with diverse perspectives on early diagnosis and the path toward preventive care. The Congress will then wrap up with Take-Home Messages, where key speakers summarize the insights and breakthroughs from a week rich in scientific discovery. Concluding remarks from Chantal Mathieu will offer a final reflection on the week’s achievements and inspire us to carry forward the ideas sparked in Bruges. As we close the IDS Congress 2024, we thank all attendees and contributors for a successful week and look forward to future progress in T1D research. Safe travels to all, and see you at the next IDS!

? Sneak Peek into IDS2024 VIP Welcome Reception in Bruges! ? Last night, we kicked off #IDS2024 with an unforgettable VIP welcome reception at the stunning city hall in Stad Brugge – a venue that truly embodies the charm and history of this medieval city. Guests were treated not only to the elegance of the 14th-century hall but also to the unique taste of Brugse Zot, Bruges' very own beer. ?? For those unfamiliar, Brugse Zot is more than just a drink; it's a celebration of local tradition and craftsmanship. Brewed by the Brouwerij De Halve Maan, a family-run establishment dating back to 1856, Brugse Zot is the only beer still brewed within the walls of Bruges. The name, which translates to "Bruges Fool," harks back to local folklore, where the people of Bruges are affectionately known as “Zotten” or “fools."
