VFC is a federal entitlement program designed to reduce or eliminate vaccine cost as a barrier to childhood vaccination. The program purchases vaccines from manufacturers at federal contract prices and provides them at no cost to participating public and private healthcare providers for use in children through age 18 years who are eligible for Medicaid, are uninsured, or are American Indian or Alaska Native. VFC also includes the RSV preventive antibody product (nirsevimab) recommended for all infants. Children whose health insurance benefit plan does not cover one or more vaccines included in VFC, or whose insurance plan has a fixed dollar cap for vaccines (after the cap is reached) are considered “underinsured” and are also able to receive VFC vaccine at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) or Rural Health Clinic (RHC). This type of limited coverage plan is now uncommon because the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires ACA-compliant plans to cover ACIP-recommended vaccines with no deductible or copay. Misinformation is unfortunately spreading online about the measles outbreak in Texas and about the measles vaccine. To help dispel the misinformation, we break down and debunk measles myths and share important info about measles and the recent outbreak. For example, the measles vaccine did not cause the Texas outbreak. Families should not try to prevent or treat measles by giving their children doses of vitamin A at home. An unvaccinated school-age child has died from measles in West Texas, according to Texas health officials. AAP President Susan Kressly said, “As a pediatrician, I am heartbroken to learn that a child has died from measles. This is a tragic and devastating loss, and our thoughts are with the family and community affected. One death from a preventable disease is one too many.” The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine protects children from serious illness. However, when immunization rates drop in a community, measles can spread and put children at risk. “No parent should have to experience the loss of a child to a preventable disease. Vaccines save lives. Pediatricians are here to talk with families about their child's health, including how they can access vaccines.
