ImmSchools is an emerging nonprofit organization that seeks to create a safe and welcoming learning environment for immigrant students. ImmSchools will work to support K-12 immigrant students by advocating for district and campus immigrant-friendly policies, providing training for teachers and school staff, and collaborating with schools, communities, and local organizations to nurture the academic, emotional, and social growth of immigrant students.

The anti-immigrant remarks made last week are showing up in our schools in a harmful way. This rethoric often shows up through bullying and harrasment, impacting students’ ability to feel safe. We encourage educators to name the hateful and anti-Black immigrant rhetoric directly and denounce it. Our students deserve to have schools that embrace their diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. All young people look to educators to get a sense that things will be okay, but also as role models in these moments. Educators should feel empowered to meet this moment as they have done every time hate tries to make its way into our communities and schools. Astou Thiane and I were interviewed by Education Week where we shared best practices for addressing the harmful consequences that anti-immigrant rethoric is having in our schools.
