Oficina Legal established itself as a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1996 due to federal restrictions on legal aid offices. The agency was later renamed to reflect the increasing diversity of the immigrant population it served. Over the last decade ILCM has established itself as Minnesota’s premier provider of comprehensive immigration legal services to low-income clients of all nationalities.

The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota honors Trans Day of Remembrance, an annual memorialization of those lost to anti-transgender violence and a recognition of the persistence of the conditions that create and allow that violence. We specifically acknowledge the intersection of anti-trans and anti-immigrant violence. Today, there are around 175,000 trans immigrants in the US, many of whom fled persecution in their native countries only to face multitudes of violence on their journey to and within the US, including in ICE detention centers. The challenges all immigrants navigate are compounded for those who do not fit the gender binary. ILCM is committed to assisting all immigrants equitably, with a conscious recognition of the additional obstacles for trans people. We will continue to build a world where everyone can live freely and peacefully. ? A vigil will be held at the Minnesota State Capitol today at 10AM. Healthcare coverage in Minnesota is no longer dependent on immigration status. The Minnesota Department of Human Services has expanded its coverage to allow undocumented people to apply for health insurance through the state. Historically, lack of insurance for undocumented people has contributed to disparities in health care access, health outcomes, and quality of life. Expanded eligibility will help decrease stress on emergency rooms by encouraging preventative care, lower costs, and, most importantly, improve the health of all Minnesotans. Applications are now open, and coverage will begin January 1. To enroll, visit https://lnkd.in/ejUU_nXw

The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) is dedicated to providing quality immigration legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees across Minnesota and North Dakota, educating our communities about immigration matters, and advocating for public policies that respect the universal human rights of immigrants. We will continue to do so regardless of who holds elected office, keeping our clients and their communities at the forefront of our work. While we do not underestimate the gravity of the situation and potential for significant obstacles ahead, ILCM is poised to confront these challenges with the utmost determination and compassion. ILCM has stood the test of time over many federal administrations. Decades of building connections within communities has positioned us to champion the rights and dignity of our clients, no matter the circumstances. The City of Moorhead, MN issued a proclamation declaring September 15-October 15 Hispanic Heritage Month. A first for Moorhead, the proclamation recognizes the vital contributions of Hispanic immigrants, particularly migrant farm workers, to the local community.
Just sharing that the City of Moorhead, Minnesota finally issued a proclamation recognizing Hispanic Awareness Month with a special mention of the migrant farmworkers who worked in the Moorhead area. This is historic as this is the first time that the city has done this proclamation. As a former farmworker who worked in the fields around rural Moorhead, I dedicate this to my parents, my siblings, tios, tias, primos, primas and families who traveled from Texas every year to work in this area. Si se puede!!!!

Amalia Moreno-Damgaard, a "banking executive turned chef/author/entrepreneur," loves telling Minnesota about Latin American through food. Born in Guatemala and raised by her grandmother, Morena-Damgaard moved to the US in the early 1980’s to attend college in Kansas City. Years later, she relocated to Minnesota, leaving behind the corporate world for a career in food and writing. "Moreno-Damgaard is a sought-after speaker who bridges cultural divides through food, an award-winning author of two deeply researched cookbooks about Latin American cuisine that could double as history books, a food and beverage consultant and a presence in several community and nonprofit organizations. She says, ‘I see myself as a cultural ambassador… as someone who has a deep desire to bring Latin America up high and to highlight the contributions of all Latinos in this country, and the contributions of their food is phenomenal.'"
