IMMERSE - the Center for Immersive Computing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - brings together expertise in immersive technologies, applications, and human factors. IMMERSE aims to perform research, educate a new workforce, and build infrastructure to enable a new era of immersive computing that will transform virtually all industries and human activities. Immersive computing promises the seamless integration of the virtual with the physical. It includes augmented, virtual, and mixed reality (AR, VR, and MR), collectively extended reality (XR), digital twins, the metaverse, spatial computing, and earable computing.

Recently I attended my first DAC – Design Automation Conference for Chips to Systems – and had a blast. It was an honor to give a keynote on immersive computing. I presented the vision of IMMERSE, the Center for Immersive Computing at Illinois, and called for a new science of design for immersive systems that can enable full system codesign, application and user-specific design, and rapid evaluation of the immersive human experience. It would be fantastic to have “design automation for immersive systems” with the immersive human experience as an integral part of the design cycle.
