DeBrena Hilton and Rebekah Patton with the Tulsa Health Department were hosted by MCHD’s Inspection Service as part of a NEHA-FDA RFFM mentorship grant on Sept. 18-20. Ms. Hilton is the Environmental Public Health Manager for the Oklahoma agency, while Ms. Patton is a data analyst. Both have been instrumental in helping the Tulsa Health Department in meeting various requirements under the FDA Voluntary National Retail Food Program Standards. They helped Derrick Scott, Brad Philips, Erika Goodwin, and Pamela Boyce analyze various aspects of Inspection Service’s retail food program that are already in place in relation to meeting FDA Standards 3, 5 and 7. They also offered insight into utilizing a Tyler-based digital inspection database system.

National Custodian Day is commemorated every year on October 2. The Mobile County Health Department recognized its employees this morning with a special event at the Keeler Memorial Compound in Downtown Mobile. “We are very proud of the custodial staff that we have working now,” said Theresa Cummings with MCHD’s Project Management & Facilities department. “They work to maintain the clinics to keep the staff and clients safe. “They are considered the front line when it comes to infectious control in the clinics. Today was just a small gesture of recognition of how much they are appreciated.” The custodial team is made up of three managers and 17 custodial workers. Scott Doutt from Procter & Gamble and April Doutt from Service Star came with breakfast for the staff and demonstrated several cleaning products that are used at MCHD. Angela Alexander, MCHD’s Public Health Nurse, also discussed proper hand washing techniques. “I want to thank our staff for the work they do day-in and day-out to provide a safe and clean workspace,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Health Officer for Mobile County. “Our public health custodians do a phenomenal job. “We have had numerous national audits from The Joint Commission, Ryan White, and the Health Resources and Services Administration where they always mention the cleanliness of our buildings.” Custodians are considered the first line of defense in the war on germs. Did you know the word comes from the Latin word “custos.” This translates in English as “guardian.”
