This week, we’re headed to Washington D.C. to recognize the 100th anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act and the ongoing fight for voting rights throughout Indian Country. Along with the Native American Rights Fund, we’re hosting ‘Count Our Votes: The Power of Native Voices’, a series of voting advocacy events taking place on Wednesday, July 31st in Washington D.C. It wasn’t until 100 years ago that Native Americans were conferred U.S. citizenship and another 40 years until all Native peoples had the right to vote. Since then, we have successfully defended our right to vote in the courts, elected lawmakers to pass key legislation to protect our religious freedoms and Tribal sovereignty, and voted in a historic number of Native lawmakers into positions of power.
