Upcoming event:?We invite you to join us on our MARCH 2025 WEBINAR presentation, as Sasan Dolati, PhD from Stantec discusses
Non-linear Finite Element Modeling of Concrete Column under Seismic Loading Histories: Parametric Investigation and Collapse Assessment.
Concrete columns are essential for building stability during earthquakes, yet their performance under a range of seismic loading histories remains incompletely understood. Continuum finite element models were developed, validated, and calibrated using experimental data from columns failing in flexure, flexural-shear, and shear modes. Model calibration entailed comparing simulated crack patterns, steel reinforcement damage, and axial collapse initiation with physical test outcomes. Parametric studies investigated the effects of varying axial loads, shear stresses, reinforcement ratios, and loading protocols (including monotonic and cyclic histories). Results indicated that repeated cyclic loading reduced lateral and axial capacity, underscoring the importance of loading history in seismic assessments. Comparisons with existing standards, such as ASCE 41-17 and ACI 318-19, demonstrated the need to refine code provisions for better accuracy. Modeling guidelines are proposed to improve the prediction of key performance indicators, thereby enabling more robust and reliable evaluations of concrete column safety in highly earthquake-prone regions.
Speaker:
Sasan Dolati, Ph.D., is a structural engineer in training with experience working on a wide range of bridge design and rehabilitation projects. During his tenure at Stantec, he was involved in the design of decks, walls, and various other structural elements. Sasan PhD focuses strongly on seismic design/retrofit and nonlinear finite element modeling of a concrete structures. He developed tools to adjust the acceptance criteria and nonlinear modeling parameters of concrete columns in ASCE 41-17 and ACI 369.1-19.
