New research published in the journal Science shows that roughly 600,000 cubic feet (17,000 cubic meters) of water that spills each second from the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico, half comes from streams that don’t even exist for part of the year. The Illinois River Watershed is dominated by ephemeral streams that contribute to and daylight as springs and seeps throughout the Watershed. https://lnkd.in/eCbxehfy

This is a big win for conservation in our region. The NWA Energy & Environment plan that Olsson has been working with the NWA Regional Planning Commission on has recently resulted in bringing $36-million in funding for land restoration and preservation in Northwest Arkansas to promote carbon sequestration and climate resilience through nature-based solutions in our region. Much of this will go to support projects undertaken by the Northwest Arkansas Land Trust, Watershed Conservation Resource Center, Illinois River Watershed Partnership, Arkansas State Parks, and local municipalities to support the creation of a regional “Green Network” of connected natural areas and corridors.
