IHA President and CEO A.J. Wilhelmi testified on Wednesday before Illinois House legislators on the devastating impact federal Medicaid cuts would have on the state’s Medicaid patients, hospitals, our healthcare system and the Illinois economy. Wilhelmi told lawmakers that even small reductions in federal Medicaid funding would result in negative consequences for hospitals, Medicaid beneficiaries and the broader healthcare system. He also emphasized hospitals are the economic engines of many communities, responsible for nearly 500,000 jobs and $117 billion in economic activity annually. Humboldt Park Health President and CEO José R. Sánchez, and Loretto Hospital President and CEO Tesa Anewishki also provided testimony, alongside Illinois Dept. of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) Director Elizabeth Whitehorn, Medicaid consumers, other healthcare advocacy organizations and the insurance industry. Wilhelmi and Sánchez later spoke at a statehouse press conference to further underscore the impact Medicaid reductions would have on hospitals, health systems and other providers.
