Did you know Adult Education programs are designed to aid students in removing barriers to both academic and workplace success by opening doors to improved literacy, career pathways, and sustainable employment for over 1 million adults with foundational skill needs and individuals learning English. Employment rates and earnings are increasing significantly for these adult learners, a quarter of whom are aged 16 – 24.

National Adult Education and Family Literacy week is celebrated from September 15 through September 21. In Illinois, over 1 million of 10.3 million Illinoisans over the age of 16 are considered at risk. Included in this number are over 400,000 individuals over age 16 with less than a 9th grade education and over 500,000 who have basic skills above a 9th grade level but lack a high school diploma. Over 2.7 million Illinois residents speak a language other than English as the primary language in their households. Over 301,103 of these individuals are over 16 and are identified as adult populations at risk. English literacy and civics education provide individuals with a pathway to citizenship, improved education, and employment. During Adult Education Week, we are celebrating our education professionals and adult learners through our What's Your Why? A Lake Land College Graduate Success Story! Blessing Nzeribe came to the United States from Nigeria many years ago, initially working as a chef and running her own restaurant in Ohio. Drawn to the prospect of expanding her career options, she later decided to move to Mattoon and pursue a nursing degree from Lake Land College. In 2022, she completed Lake Land’s Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program and earned her license by completing the NCLEX exam. In 2024, she completed her studies by graduating from the Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) program, and she is now eager to begin her new nursing career in Texas. During her time at Lake Land College, Blessing demonstrated an impressive dedication to her studies and passion for her community. A leader among her fellow students, Blessing served as president of the International Studies Association during the 2022-2023 academic year. Her efforts were recognized with a Non-traditional Student of the Year nomination in 2023. As a member of TRIO, she received the “Grit” Award in 2024 in recognition of her determination to overcome obstacles.

We'll be highlighting Illinois Community College Success Stories all summer long. Today we celebrate College of Lake County's Nestor Munoz! "Nestor Munoz’s favorite thing to do has always been going to shows and concerts, even if it meant taking a day off work. In the live entertainment production program at College of Lake County, he’s preparing to make going to shows a career. This May, Munoz was one of eight applicants selected in a pool of 4,800 to train with Cirque de Soleil in Las Vegas for a week-long audio program. Munoz had some experience in the field already, stumbling into an opportunity to help set up a concert for the rapper Drake during a time when he was still deciding if he wanted to go to school. He worked on a few more shows before seeing CLC had a live entertainment program, and he decided he wanted to make it his career. Outside of school, Munoz works by assignment as a stagehand audio tech. He also works in CLC’s scene shop doing carpentry on sets."
