?? Exciting News for Aging Equity in Illinois! ?? Governor Pritzker has signed an executive order to create a planning commission for a multi-sector plan for aging, a huge win for aging equity and a major milestone for the Illinois Aging Together campaign, led by Health & Medicine Policy Research Group. This plan will ensure Illinois is ready to support our rapidly growing older population with comprehensive, coordinated care. We're proud to see Illinois take the lead in promoting the value, meaning, and purpose of life that older adults should be able to enjoy with their families and communities. ?? What does Ageism have to do with health? ?? Ageism – discrimination based on age – can have serious health impacts on older adults. Ageism can manifest in decreased job opportunities, false assumptions about ability and health, and other falsehoods about getting older that are unfortunately commonplace. Ageism can harm mental health, increase risk of chronic illness, and reduce access to health care. Ageism can also discourage older adults from seeking medical help and participating in community activities, further isolating them. Addressing ageism is crucial for promoting the health and well-being of older adults. By challenging stereotypes and promoting positive attitudes towards aging, we can create a society where older adults feel valued and supported. ?? Why does Aging Equity matter? ?? Achieving aging equity would mean that all older adults have access to the resources, care, and opportunities they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives. It addresses health and aging inequities that affect older adults because of racism, gender inequities, class inequity, ageism, ableism, and other oppressions. By promoting aging equity, we can create communities where older adults are respected, valued, and supported. This includes better health care access, affordable housing, and opportunities for social engagement. Aging equity benefits everyone, as it leads to healthier, more inclusive communities.
