#LookingBack: At the 2023 ILCA Annual Conference, ILCA Global Advocacy Adviser Lisa Mandell, MBA, IBCLC, moderated the opening plenary session to discuss how IBCLCs can most effectively impact breastfeeding/chestfeeding. She shared a startling statistic: "Globally, there are about 35,700 IBCLCs; of this, approximately 19,000 are in the United States, leaving only 16,000 IBCLCs in the rest of the world. Many countries have no IBCLCs at all, or very few. In comparison, there are approximately 28 million nurses and 1.9 million midwives, worldwide." Happy IBCLC Day! https://lnkd.in/gpNvUqe9 Today, as the International Lactation Consultant Association, we celebrate with more than 35,000 International Board Certified Lactation Consultants in more than 180 countries worldwide, and recognize the importance of skilled, compassionate lactation support and care that has and continues to transform world health. We also recognize and honour the work of our colleagues, globally, who are growing the profession, developing knowledge and skills, and mentoring our future IBCLCs, particularly in communities and places where social and economic disparities affect access to the IBCLC credential and training. As IBCLCs, we facilitate, educate, collaborate, and advocate on all aspects of the clinical management of breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human lactation. We work in clinics, hospitals, and homes, use our knowledge of infant feeding in emergencies to provide support to displaced families with infants during national emergencies and disasters, and so much more.
