Today we hosted a WHO/Europe-UK high-level roundtable, which provided an important space to discuss England’s 10-year health plan (10yHP). We explored ways to collaborate with stakeholders and communities to move care closer to people and build sustainable and people-centered health systems. I am grateful to UK's Secretary of State The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP and Minister of State Karin Smyth for inviting WHO Regional Office for Europe to collaborate on the 10yHP, one of the five top priorities of the UK government. ? The three main shifts of 10yHP resonate strongly with the 2nd European Programme of Work – #EPW2 – our compass for the next five years and beyond, which we are co-creating right now with the UK and other Member States. ? 1?? From hospital to community – strengthening primary health care and long-term care to ease pressure on hospitals, while empowering community health providers and local health systems. ? 2?? From treatment to prevention – prioritizing the prevention of non-communicable, chronic diseases by promoting self-care, physical activity, sound nutrition, mental health and well-being. ? 3?? From analogue to digital – leveraging digital health technologies and AI to improve health care efficiency, accessibility and workforce performance.?? ? Leaders across the European Region are grappling with the same challenges and WHO Regional Office for Europe is bringing them together to share experiences and learn from one another - a good example of a win-win collaboration that advances both the UK’s and WHO/Europe’s priorities. ? #HealthForAll Department of Health and Social Care NHS England NHS in UK World Health Organization Natasha Azzopardi Muscat Gauden Galea Tomas Zapata David Novillo Ortiz, PhD Alexandre Louren?o Miklós Szócska Martin Krayer von Krauss Chloe Lawson-Duffy Caroline Gloyne Ed Moses Johan Van Eldere Henrik Ibsen Mirella MN Minkman Reinhard Busse

Today is Rare Disease Day. Back in 2022, we published our ?????????????? ?????? ?????????????? report with the Coalition for Life Course Immunisation that explored vaccination coverage among Europeans living with chronic and rare diseases. Uptake among clinical risk groups in Europe is low. There are many structural barriers to vaccination, such as out-of-pocket costs, accessibility issues, and stigma, which can all prevent people living with chronic conditions from getting vaccinated. As Fran?ois Hou?ez from EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe highlights in the report, "Cost might be an issue, as well as stigma, but the organisational aspect of vaccination for people with chronic diseases is also difficult." Addressing these access barriers is crucial to ensure people living with underlying health conditions across Europe can access the recommended routine vaccinations that are necessary to protect their health. New research published today by the International Longevity Centre - UK finds that serious mental health conditions are hampering Europeans’ ability to live more fulfilling long lives. The report highlights that in 2021, the world’s population experienced over 155 million years lived with disability (YLD) as a result of mental health conditions. ????????’?? ?????? ???????????????????? ???? ?????????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ???????????????? ???????? ?? ???????? (??.?? ????????) ???????? ?? ???????????? ????????????-?????????????? ????????????????????. During the same year, an average of 15,154 per 100,000 people in the EU lived with a mental health disorder - ???? ?????????????? ??????????????????. In an ageing society where many Europeans can expect to live to 100, and as mental health literacy grows, serious mental health conditions will only become more prevalent. That’s why we’re calling on the European Commission to establish a “European Year of Mental Health” to cement this issue as a regional priority for the EU. Europe must adopt a life course approach towards serious mental health conditions to ensure there is the correct support for people of all ages throughout their longer lives. An important policy brief by the European Policy Centre outlining the need to respond to the challenges of demographic change: "In its analysis, the Commission overlooks the demographic transition as an important horizontal transformation impacting (the health of) its workforce. This applies particularly to the healthcare sector. The costs of non-intervention are high: failure to address the demographic transition leads to workforce shortages and deterioration of healthcare delivery." And beyond the healthcare sector, there's a real need to adapt other areas of our economies and societies so they're ready for ageing. Investing in health prevention, creating age-friendly workforces, and improving social infrastructure and transport are just a number of the measures needed to support an ageing society and ensure that we can all reap the social, economic and health benefits of longer lives. ?? Policy Brief | Healthy Competition: How the EU can prepare for the demographic transition ?? By Elizabeth Kuiper, Danielle Brady & Madda Henry Magbity Europe’s competitiveness depends on its people, but sweeping demographic changes risk undermining our economic future. Our brief argues that the demographic transition is emerging as a ‘waiting crisis’ that demands urgent attention. Europe’s competitive edge is at risk if these demographic challenges remain unaddressed. The transformation of Europe’s labour market is reshaping our economic landscape, yet current EU policies have largely overlooked this crucial factor. Moreover, prioritising brain health is essential to drive transformation and secure long-term growth. Read the full Policy Brief here ?? https://lnkd.in/e4hub-HC
