Illinois has 1,100 miles of navigable inland waterways. According to 2018 data, 83 million tons of freight moved on Illinois waterways valued at $13.2 billion. In this episode of IL Corn TV, Illinois farmer and IL Corn board director John Klemm talks with Paul Rohde, Vice President of the Waterways Council, Inc., about the critical role of the U.S. inland waterways system. They dive into how rivers, locks, and dams make barge transportation the most fuel-efficient way to move essential commodities like grain. Paul explains the efficiency of barge transport compared to semi-trucks and rail, emphasizing the need for infrastructure modernization to keep America's agricultural products flowing efficiently. Tune in for insights on how this aging system impacts farmers and what’s being done to ensure its future viability. See full episode at www.youtube.com/ilcorn

This past summer, I had the opportunity to work for IL Corn as their Legislative Intern in Bloomington, IL. As I settle back into my routine going into my senior year at the University of Illinois, I have had time to reflect on my time with IL Corn and fully appreciate the invaluable experience I have gained. In my role, I delved into policy research, heavily focusing on the Farm Bill and state-level policy issues, and participated in meetings that allowed me to better understand the policymaking process. One of my major projects involved scheduling meetings at the offices of each 17 of Illinois’s Congressional and Senate offices to prepare for IL Corn’s August trip to Washington, D.C., and the National Corn Growers Association’s Corn Congress. This project significantly enhanced my organizational and communication skills. All of my experiences culminated when I was also able to travel to D.C., where I attended Corn Congress, met with various congressional offices, met with agriculture officials at the Canadian Embassy, and sat in on a discussion with Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack at the USDA. I want to thank Haley Bickelhaupt, Ashley Deal, Megan Dwyer, and the rest of the team at IL Corn for all of their support this summer and for giving me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in an industry that means a great deal to me.
