In honor of International Women’s Day and the start of Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the incredible women of IKM Architecture! Their dedication and expertise drive our teams to deliver design solutions that make a meaningful difference for our clients and the community. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Passavant Centers of Excellence was redesigned to enhance the patient experience with a refreshed entrance, improved signage, landscaping, interconnecting stairs, and digital displays. This project won 1st place in the Healthcare Category at the 2024 IIDA Pennsylvania New Jersey Delaware Chapter Design Awards. Project Manager: Christine Lyons; Project Architects: Marissa Kohler and Tiffany Devich Peter; Interior Designers: Lauren Vrbin and Whitney Livsey. 2. The Admissions Office and First Floor Administration Renovations at Duquesne University was transformed into an administrative hub through a three-phase renovation, adding a welcoming center, meeting spaces, and lounges to enhance student and visitor experiences. Project Manager: Christine Lyons; Interior Designer: Whitney Livsey; Project Designers: Angela Ranali and Rachel Park. 3. The new SEHA Corniche Women’s Hospital embodies compassionate care with a modern fa?ade featuring a feminine mashrabiya-inspired veil, serene interiors, and nine floors of specialized facilities, including an IVF clinic and neonatal care units. Principal in Charge: Tami Greene; Project Architects: Tiffany Devich Peter and Natalie Mitchell; Interior Designers: Angela Ranali and Kayleen O’Brien; Interior Designer: Katie Gumina. 4.?IKM designed a 65,000-square-foot facility for Southwood Children's Behavioral Healthcare to meet the need for child and adolescent inpatient services, featuring units for ages 4-18 aimed at emotional stabilization, totaling 108 new psychiatric beds. Project Architect: Marissa Kohler; Interior Designer: Whitney Livsey; Project Designer: Kayleen O’Brien; Environmental Graphics: Jessica Sandy. 5.?St. Clair Health expanded outpatient services with the Dunlap Family Outpatient Center, enhancing the patient experience through valet services and co-located amenities. This marked the healthcare system’s largest expansion in 40 years, requiring collaboration between two municipalities. The construction industry is evolving, but traditional project delivery methods like design-bid-build still dominate — where the owner hires a designer, finalizes plans, and then bids out the construction. While alternative methods like Construction Manager at Risk (CM-R), Design-Build, and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) offer more collaboration and efficiency, their adoption has been slower than expected. While technology, like building information modeling (BIM), has pushed for change, success ultimately comes down to communication and trust, not just the contract. In the latest issue of BreakingGround, Tami Greene, President of IKM Architecture, shares her perspective on alternative project delivery methods and the role of BIM in collaboration. BIM helps with alternative delivery. We begin construction documentation while still designing, which forces early decision-making, says Tami. She emphasizes that constant communication and collaboration, not just intermittent pricing exercises, leads to better project outcomes. In Pittsburgh, CM-at-Risk (CM-R) dominates, but in other regions, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and design-build are gaining traction.
