Our glamorous team had an incredible evening at the AIA Pittsburgh | The Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Design Awards and Beaux Arts Ball at the newly restored Carnegie Music Hall. IKM Architecture was proud to sponsor this event, which celebrated design excellence with the local A/E/C community and marked the 125th anniversary of the Pittsburgh AIA Chapter. The event program also featured fun facts about the chapter’s history, including a shout-out to Chatham Village, an innovative housing project completed by IKM Architecture’s predecessors, Ingham and Boyd, in 1936. Today is the last day to cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award in the 2024 AIA Cleveland Design Awards! IKM Architecture is proud to have the following four projects submitted this year and to be a Silver Drink Sponsor. Be sure to grab an IKM Old Fashioned at the Design Awards event this Friday, November 22nd, at Hotel Cleveland, Autograph Collection Hotel! 1. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Radiology Administrative Suite: The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's master plan included relocating the radiology administrative suite to the Eye and Ear Institute building, featuring a design that promotes interaction through reduced private reading rooms, unassigned touchdown spaces, a flexible main lounge, and soundproofing, all enhanced by colorful accents and radiology-themed artwork. 2. Static Motion, Wabash Pier Design Competition: The architecture competition to revitalize Pittsburgh’s Wabash Bridge piers resulted in the winning design "Static Motion," which transforms the landmark into two distinct bars—one a relaxed North Bar linked to the bike trail and happy hour crowd, and the other a lively South Bar, designed as a social dance club. 3. Butler Area School District Senior High School Classroom and Auxiliary Gym: The Butler Area School District expanded the senior high school to accommodate ninth graders by adding a new classroom corridor and auxiliary gym, enhancing both academic and athletic spaces while maintaining alignment with modern teaching methods and the school's historic character. 4. Confidential Healthcare Client Replacement Bed Tower: The proposed seven-story, 240-bed addition to this regional medical center aims to improve patient care by increasing private rooms, enhancing views, and accommodating various medical services, including a behavioral health unit, diagnostic imaging, obstetrics, and acute care, all designed to promote patient privacy, comfort, and infection control. Happy National STEM/STEAM Day! Today is all about inspiring students to explore the exciting career paths in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Did you know that incorporating art into a STEM curriculum promotes a more well rounded education? Art enhances skills like design, innovation, and communication, which are essential in today’s evolving careers. That's why you'll often see STEAM used alongside STEM—to represent a more holistic approach to learning. We’re proud to have planned and designed many STEM spaces for users ranging from k-12 students to research scientists! 1. The STEM hallway in the recently completed Butler Area School District Senior High School classroom addition helps highlight the new STEM space and puts student work on display. 2. The Calgon Carbon Laboratories at the Innovation Center were designed to support advanced research in purification and separation technologies, with interior architecture that accommodates public viewing of lab spaces, integrates high-tech aesthetics, and addresses technical challenges like sound isolation, dust control, and thermal processes. 3. Butler Senior High School’s new STEM space includes a maker space that can adapt as tools, equipment, and learning methods evolve. Power Outlets are dropped down from the ceiling, offering easy reconfiguration for different functions. 4. Carnegie Mellon University Yttri Biological Sciences Lab renovation transformed four separate lab spaces into a highly computational research environment with collaborative areas, adjustable furniture, tunable lighting, and fully cleanable finishes, designed for flexibility and comfort, and used as a recruitment tool for new students and professors. 5. The Vitalant Parkway Center 5 project consolidated two business units into a single building, with IKM designing the renovation of three floors to house state-of-the-art clinical blood laboratories and a therapeutic apheresis clinic, providing customer service, employee training, and patient care in one location.
