?? "What we build today is what we’ll use tomorrow. It’s not a transition if we still grow the problem." – Tzeporah Berman, Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. In recent weeks, the IKEA Foundation has welcomed Tzeporah Berman, Founder and Chair of Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, and Kumi Naidoo, the initiative’s new President, to discuss the growing movement calling for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, which includes 16 countries engaging in discussions on the proposed mechanism to manage the transition to safe, renewable and affordable energy for all. Their message was clear: without a managed decline, fossil fuel production could drive us towards a 3.7°C temperature rise – well beyond safe limits. Yet, there's still time to change course. Agreeing on a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels would be a major step towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and protecting our planet. The latest International Energy Agency (IEA) review reinforces the urgency of the challenge. Despite the rapid growth of renewable energy, global emissions continue to rise. While expanding renewables is crucial, we also need to phase out fossil fuels to ensure a healthier, safer and more sustainable future. The draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 is now open for public consultation - and we encourage everyone to participate. The draft standard sets out a science-based, innovative and pragmatic framework that enables more businesses worldwide to join the 3,000 with net-zero targets or which have committed to set them. It is informed by the latest climate science, regulation, and recognized standards and frameworks, as well as feedback from businesses about what they need to achieve the collective ambition of a net-zero future. The feedback we gather from this and other consultations, our expert working groups and pilot testing will all inform changes ahead of the standard’s final approval. The draft standard aims to accelerate corporate decarbonization by: - Tackling barriers to scope 3, or value chain, action – the most commonly cited challenge by businesses - Maintaining focus on emissions reduction while exploring incentives to support scaling of climate finance and carbon removals - Making it easier for companies in emerging economies to set targets - Incentivizing ambition and action through new model to validate and recognize progress against targets We have a limited carbon budget left. Companies must act at pace to accelerate climate action, driving transformation, building investor confidence and unlocking long-term growth. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, launched by Tzeporah Berman (Awardee 2019) through the #ClimateBreakthroughAward program, is a pioneering effort. Such a treaty would represent a fundamental shift in how the world manages fossil fuel production and could help avoid carbon emissions from currently undeveloped reserves. The ambitious initiative seeks to build global cooperation to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, end the expansion of fossil fuels, and equitably phase out existing production. The initiative draws unique inspiration from past treaties that addressed global threats such as nuclear proliferation. To date, its momentum has led to endorsements from over 120 cities and subnational governments, 3,500+ organizations and institutions, and more than one million people, including Nobel laureates.
