Thank you Integrative Healthcare Symposium for a great show this year! Cheryl Myers and I loved staying busy at our booth meeting new practitioners and getting to see some of our existing practitioners in person.

Life expectancy in the U.S. is declining, yet spending is going through the roof. Victoria Maizes MD bought that message home last week at the Integrative Healthcare Symposium. Something is very wrong for American’s and their health-span, but it’s not all bad. You can do something about your health and repair the damage that has accumulated over the years. Chronic diseases across all age brackets and demographics in the U.S. are increasing at rapid rates, metabolic dysfunction is rife and it is clear why. It’s no surprise when the body starts to shout loudly that something is off. Your body is always working for you but it will yell loudly with symptoms, sickness and dis-ease if you’re not paying attention to it. You need to know how to repair and heal though and you can’t just hope things will work out. Why? Because we live in a pro-inflammatory world and you need to learn the tricks of how to live in an anti-inflammatory way. Health isn’t about masking symptoms or pushing through. It’s about a daily set of choices that stack over time. We now know that Alzheimer’s and dementia begin decades before symptoms emerge. You can do something about it! That’s how powerful your body is. Through the insights of epigenetics you can switch on and off genes, so even the statement of “my parents had it” isn’t as strong anymore - unless you believe it and then you have work to do! What a treat these last two weeks have been in connecting with colleagues at the Integrative Healthcare Symposium, having our Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine Fellowship reunion and speaking on a panel on Longevity at the Ned in NYC. We discussed a range of topics from hallmarks of aging, fasting, mitochondria, gut microbiome, how to maximize polyphenols in olive oil, to movement and the power of community. It is an interesting time in medicine with advances in AI and its many applications in medicine, and the field of longevity - where the concept of aging is being challenged. Traditionally considered a natural process and not a disease state, it is now considered a disease by many, and more nuanced by some. It’s energizing to see the evolution of this field and collaborate with healthcare providers who are committed to responsibly advancing the practice of medicine, personalizing patient care and are deeply invested in their patients’ wellbeing. Going into medical school almost twenty years ago, I had no idea I would be practicing at the intersection of internal medicine, integrative and functional medicine, while supporting my patients with healthspan and longevity. Doing my integrative medicine fellowship and applying these skills (and other trainings and certifications) to the foundation of internal medicine, transformed my practice.
