Consider the African energy landscape by the numbers: A modest 4% contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, 600 million people without access to electricity (that’s 20% of Africa’s population), and one billion people (70%) without access to clean cooking fuels, resulting in more than three million premature deaths per year. It’s a stark picture. So, the responsible development of Africa’s energy industry is crucially important. However, the need for access to electricity and clean cooking fuels puts natural gas exploration and production as the number one priority for the continent.? ? These were takeaways for Andrew Burr and me as we enthusiastically represented IHRDC this past week at Africa Energy Week 2024 Africa Energy Week in Cape Town, South Africa. TRADE TRAINING: The size of the global oil market exceeds $2 trillion, and oil trading works by enabling investors to take a position on whether futures contracts will rise or fall in value. London is one of the largest centers of this international oil trading activity, and the city will soon be the venue for IHRDC’s “Introduction to Trading and Oil Price Risk Management.” The course is scheduled for November 11-15 and focuses on physical trading operations and economics along with an in-depth explanation of risk management instruments and techniques. Participants will make decisions as part of a crude oil and refined product trading team, maximizing profits through an understanding of trading economics and the management of anticipated price risks. The program will benefit anyone coming into trading from other segments of the petroleum industry as well as those in oil companies, banks, law firms, accountancies, regulators, the media, and financial services who interface with traders and trading. It will also help those with an understanding of physical markets who want to learn more about derivatives and hedging. During exercises, delegates will identify and manage the price risks of their trading book. They will trade the full range of derivative markets, most of them in real-time, using prevailing market prices from Reuters, Platts, and Argus. As market conditions change, participants will be asked to compare the performance of different instruments and learn to choose the appropriate one to meet their objectives. We've kicked off the gap analysis phase of the Majnoon Oil Field competency project! This phase of the project will help ensure training is targeted at specific competency gaps identified in the field and help BOC staff achieve their full potential in their current roles. I visited the field recently as we finalized the logistics plan for this phase of work. The Majnoon Oil Field, with its diverse workforce of over 1,000 employees, is a critical asset to Iraq's energy sector. On of the largest, undeveloped oilfields in the world, BOC has big plans for increasing production. By implementing a robust competency management system, BOC and Antonoil aim to: - Identify the skills and opportunities for improvement in the workforce - Develop targeted learning and development programs to bridge skill gaps - Enhance employee performance and productivity - Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement At IHRDC, we develop people to make a difference and are excited to collaborate with BOC and Antonoil to make this project a resounding success. PLANNING FOR TRANSFORMATION: There’s no shortage of problems confronting today’s oil-and-gas industry managers: Workforce skill gaps, geopolitical risks, and decarbonization goals. As the saying goes, “If you don’t keep up, you’ll fall behind.” That’s why “Key Business Challenges Facing Today’s Energy Leaders” is such a timely and important instructional program. You gather with your peers at IHRDC’s new Management Institute to discuss these shared hurdles and then develop strategies to deal with the changing industry landscape. You’ll return home with renewed confidence and a set of fresh actionable items. It's a two-unit program held in Boston Massachusetts, and you can register for either one or both of them.
