Dr. Dickson Despommier, a true visionary and pioneer in the field of vertical farming, has passed away on February 7, 2025, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped the future of sustainable agriculture. As a microbiologist and professor, Dr. Despommier introduced the modern concept of vertical farming in 1999, sparking a global movement towards urban agriculture.?His groundbreaking book, "The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century," published in 2010, became a catalyst for the industry's growth and inspired countless individuals and organizations to explore innovative solutions for eco-conscious food production. Dr. Despommier's vision of growing food in urban skyscrapers has led to the development of thousands of vertical farms across the globe, contributing to increased food security, reduced agricultural footprint, and more sustainable urban environments. Dr. Despommier has greatly impacted my career, inspiring me to join the vertical farming movement in 2016, and dedicate myself to solving the challenge of growing food closer to where it is consumed - in cities. I am sure his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of innovators and entrepreneurs in the field of sustainable agriculture and climate change at large. Sheikh et al. researched and published in Scientific Reports on acidified biochar's effectiveness in reducing cadmium effects on spinach. The 1.20% biochar significantly boosted growth and nutrient uptake, enhancing chlorophyll content.
