???? What do you do when the community beliefs could lead to water pollution? How do you balance respect for local practices and improving water security? ?? ?? For this #GWSSENCE story, written by Olutoyin Fashae (University of Ibadan), we descent to the Southwestern part of #Nigeria, which is home to the #Ilaje communities. Groundwater is a key resource of life for them and its quality is, therefore, of paramount importance to their health and livelihoods. This is why, when a group of researchers paid them a visit and saw that unsafe practices led to deteriorating groundwater quality, they were incredibly surprised. However, what was even more surprising (and equally fascinating) to them, was the reasoning behind these practices. Let’s dive into a story of breaking myths and saving lives. ?? https://lnkd.in/dEncde9P #groundwater #groundwaterstories #storytelling #communityengagement Tibor Stigter Yangxiao Zhou IHE Delft Institute for Water Education IHE Delft Water and Development Partnership Programme

Just returned from Geneva after two incredibly productive days with the modelling community, we finalised key methodological details for the next edition of the State of Global Water Resources Report of the World Meteorological Organization. You probably will struggle to find my face in the photo ?? and it is only a part of an incredible team of scientists behind the report! It’s amazing to see how many new colleagues are contributing to the report and how much we’ve grown over the past three years, adding new hydrological variables and making continuous improvements to provide an even more comprehensive snapshot of the global water situation each year. A huge thank you to all the colleagues who contribute their data, technical guidance, and insights. I’m already looking forward to the 2024 edition, with more variables, more teams on board, and even better coverage to be launched in autumn 2025. ?? #FoodForThoughts "Should fluoride be in our water?" ?? ?? A little fluoride prevents tooth decay and that's why some countries (particularly the #USA) started adding it to its tap water. However, with concentrated fluoride now being used in toothpaste and an excess of fluoride actually having a reversed effect, it poses one question.. "Should fluoride be in our water?" ?? ?? With the countdown about to start in some countries, we want to wish you a Happy New Year! ?? We took this picture during our annual team meeting, in which we looked back on what we've achieved in 2024. From the 40 (!) countries included in the WMO status report (https://lnkd.in/dtBcXRC9) to groundwater monitoring in #Rwanda (https://lnkd.in/d7mZ9dx5). And from assisting Le Monde in their groundwater contamination investigation (https://lnkd.in/duju4mwz) to our contribution to #WorldWaterForum10 (https://lnkd.in/dQuvGHrd). We also expanded our Groundwater Correspondents Network to 25 correspondents (https://lnkd.in/dyyUYJSm), published our very first magazine (https://lnkd.in/dsnuB367) and joined hands with Football for Peace (FfP) (https://lnkd.in/gNhcz_cU). And we developed a groundwater management strategy in #Samoa (https://lnkd.in/dQ3ywQ4G), where 2025 is already about to start. ??But during this meeting we also looked forward and made our New Year's resolutions. This year we created our new strategy towards sustainable and equitable groundwater (https://lnkd.in/eaEQ5pWQ) and 2025 will be in light of putting it into practice. ?? New exciting projects in #Tajikistan and the #Mekong region, a brand new website and we will even welcome a new staff member. It looks like 2025 will be special year for sure! We will also launch two new flagship products, but we can't give any spoilers yet ??. ?? Don't miss out on any IGRAC news and subscribe to the newsletter: https://lnkd.in/dxtt2Zrt ??
