But it’s the recent progress deciphering scrolls, discovered in nearby Herculaneum, that has got us excited this week. Text contained within the Oxford Herculaneum scrolls, usually housed at the Bodleian library (University of Oxford) were thought to be lost forever, until now. Using the Diamond Light Source synchrotron, researchers have analysed these carbonized papyri to virtually unwrap text unseen for 2,000 years! Now comes the fun part. Deciphering the contents has become an international effort in the form of the Vesuvius Challenge. In honor of World Wildlife Day today, we’re celebrating how new evidence (often genetics-based) has reshaped our understanding of the natural world. As scientists, we constantly refine our opinion when fresh insights emerge, and in the case of animal classification that sometimes reveals surprising connections between species! ?????? ?????????? ?????????? ?? Before the 1980s, these laid-back bamboo-munching animals were thought to belong to the Procyonidae family (raccoons). However, DNA analysis later confirmed that they are true bears (Ursidae)! Studies show they diverged from a common bear ancestor around 19 million years ago, a fact that adds a fascinating twist in their evolutionary story. ?????? ???????? ?????????? ?? Before the late 1990s, these giants of the sea were classified under the order Cetacea (aquatic mammals). But genetic research in the 2000s revealed they are also related to hippos and other even-toed ungulates! This led to the creation of a new clade, Cetartiodactyla, combining whales with animals like hippos and deer. We’d never have guessed that about the blue whale! Honestly, we didn’t believe it ourselves at first. So, of course, we had to check the reference. (PMID: 22627059). Mind blown! ?? Fun Fact Friday- Goldene We’ve all heard of graphene but now, please welcome GOLDENE to the expanding family of single-atom layer materials. *round of applause* Researchers from the Link?ping University in Sweden have found a way to extract monolayers of Gold (Au) using a technique known as wet-chemical etching to isolate Au from Ti?AuC? , which for want of a better phrase, acts as a sort of “holding material” for the 2D gold layer. Oh, the frustration when a teammate uses the sample or reagent you REALLY needed for a critical experiment.... ?? ?? ?? I’ve lost count of how many times this has happened to me. And honestly, I can’t even put a dollar value on the economic damage it caused. Like that time someone used the only vial of a cell line before we could expand it and freeze working stocks. Or when the last bit of an antibody lot— the one we needed for the final repeat of an assay in our IND study—was used up. We then had to re-titrate and validate a new lot before we could even run the last assay repeat. Talk about weeks of delays... and endless headaches. It’s never on purpose, of course! Just the reality of a bunch of scientists sharing a lab space and the same reagents, samples, and consumables. How is anyone supposed to know what’s needed for a specific experiment? That’s exactly why we added this super simple, but oh-so-life-saving feature to IGOR. (a species of mosquito with a notorious taste for human blood) evolved in northern Europe less than 200 years ago. But new genomic data rewrites this story; Instead of recently evolving underground, molestus actually originated aboveground in the Middle East >1,000 years ago. The authors (link in comments) hypothesize that it likely first adapted to early agricultural societies in warmer climates and only much later set up home in underground urban spaces. This isn’t just a fascinating revision of history; it’s a striking example of exaptation (yes, we had to Google it too!): Traits that originally evolve in one environment that later prove useful in a completely different one. Today, molestus continues to thrive in dark underground spaces, and remains active all year round- so sadly there’s no respite from these unwelcome commuters....
