Researchers at the Center for Research and Reform in Education at?Johns Hopkins University School of Education?have just released the results of a comprehensive study conducted to evaluate Ignite Reading’s daily 1:1 tutoring program. Here are a few of their key findings: ? Most students began well below benchmark. The percentage of students meeting DIBELS benchmark increased significantly from 16% at the beginning of the school year (BOY) to 50% at the end of the school year (EOY), while the percentage of students requiring intensive intervention dropped from 64% BOY to 28% EOY. ? Tutored students gained an additional 5.4 months of learning as compared to national averages. ? Students across subgroups — historically marginalized groups, English learners, and students with IEPs — achieved similar gains, with only small, non-meaningful differences between them. Ignite Reading's 1:1 online tutoring teaches students the foundational skills they need to become fluent readers.
关于我们
Just 3 in 10 U.S. 4th graders are reading on grade level.* Ignite Reading is on a mission to fix this, ensuring every student can access the tools they need to be a confident, fluent reader by the end of 1st grade. With a team of literacy specialists and highly trained tutors, we provide daily, targeted instruction via 1:1 virtual tutoring. Our evidence-based instruction helps kids quickly closes reading gaps, so they can successfully make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Results from an evaluation of Ignite Reading by the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University** showed that students reading below grade level who received tutoring achieved significant literacy gains: ? Students at benchmark increased 213% ? ? Students needing intensive intervention decreased 55% ? Notably, researchers found students across subgroups — historically marginalized groups, English learners, and students with IEPs — achieved similar gains, with only small, non-meaningful differences between them. The study concluded "Ignite Reading offers a scalable solution to improving early literacy outcomes in diverse educational settings, with significant implications for addressing equity and literacy gaps." *** "Ignite Reading is one of the most, if not the most, successful interventions we have implemented in our district. The student results and program design are indisputable." - Claudia Salvestrin, Assistant Superintendent, Red Bluff Union Elementary School District, CA *National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2024 **Neitzel, A. On this last day of Black History Month, we're reminded that its creator, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, always intended for study of Black history to continue all year long, not just for one week or month. ?? This gem from Woodson's Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) (hosted on Project MUSE) is packed with resources to help educators honor that promise. #BlackHistoryMonth #EducationalExcellence #EdLeaders #EducationalLeadership

It's thanks to a teacher (and principal, college professor, dean, etc.) that we mark each February as #BlackHistoryMonth. In honor of Dr. Carter Woodson's life's work, we asked some of the many tutor educators on the Ignite Reading team to share how their Black identities have shaped the educators they are today. #Education #Educators

?? What's more magical than the look on a child's face when they get a brand-new book? The look on their face when they open the book and see someone who looks just like them staring back. This Black History Month, we're shining a light on a few of the organizations that make these magical moments happen by placing diverse books in kids' hands: Charnaie Gordon, MS, DTM's 50 States, 50 Books (https://lnkd.in/e5qvw8sn) Jahmal Lake's Our Kids Read (https://lnkd.in/efvcTs-7) Little Free Library's Read in Color program (https://lnkd.in/g7MFbrj8) Helping Kids Rise (https://lnkd.in/eD2_BDU9) #BlackHistoryIsNow

What is your district doing RIGHT to support students' literacy journeys? It may not be a question you've examined recently. After all, there is a LOT of work to be done to end our nation's reading crisis. However, Ignite Reading CEO Jessica Reid Sliwerski inspires us to look not only at fix what is broken but to celebrate the wins. So, we ask again: What is your district doing RIGHT to support students' literacy journeys? #EdLeadership #LiteracyMatters #Superintendents #Principals
The overall storyline about the NAEP scores this year was pretty grim, but it's important to highlight and learn from literacy bright spots. Louisiana is one of them. The state has made so many of the right moves to turn around their literacy crisis, including moving to a Science of Reading-based approach. And, somewhat controversially, the state ended their third grade promotion policy, which means if a student can’t read at the end of third grade, they don’t move on to fourth grade (critically, the year NAEP measures). It can be really tough on a kid socially to be held back and what I’ve always believed is that if you are going to make the difficult decision to keep a kid in the same grade for another year because they can’t read, you’d better be ready to teach them to read! And Louisiana was ready. But ultimately, every state should have the goal of making sure we are teaching every kid to read by the end of first grade so systems don’t have to hold kids back at all. We AREN’T in a literacy crisis because certain kids can’t learn. We’re in a literacy crisis because we’ve been teaching kids to read the wrong way for a really, really long time! Congratulations to Louisiana’s education chief Cade Brumley for his literacy leadership; to Dr. Chakesha Scott, MBA at one of our partner schools, Impact Charter in Baker; and most of all to the kids in Louisiana who are showing us all that if you give students the right tools and the right instruction, they will learn to read!?

Does opening a book ?? feel like opening a doorway to knowledge? For the millions of kids living in homes without access to books, those doorways may feel like they've been plastered shut, but Moses B. Mbeseha, MPH, MBA and Dr. Karlos L. Marshall are two people doing what they can to pry them open. Since 2016, their organization, the Conscious Connect Community Development Corporation, has been on a mission to #EndBookDeserts across Ohio. The duo launched their work with a campaign they called The Root —an initiative that placed culturally-relevant literacy stations in 65+ barbershops, beauty salons, and small businesses. In the years since, they've added a book bike that delivers books to underserved and under-resourced communities, Houses of Knowledge where families can find free books to take home, and other programs designed to close opportunity gaps for kids with the help of books. Their work even caught the eye of the #LibraryOfCongress in 2019, earning the library's prestigious Literacy Award. Visit the organization website to learn more about their work. #BlackHistoryIsNow
