We are so excited for the next generation of diverse aerospace leaders #ignitedthinkers ?? ??

Today was a magical full-circle moment: I returned to the county where I studied K-12 to host an IgnitedThinkers assembly for over 200 students in 5th and 6th grades! ?????? Growing up, I was always one of the students in the gymnasium, eagerly listening to the inspiring speakers in awe. Today, it was a true privilege to be on the other side of the stage and give back to the community I grew up in. From discussing the latest space innovations, sharing how space exploration benefits Earth, exploring interdisciplinary aerospace careers, building model rockets, doing Blue Origin Club for the Future Postcards, and having Virgin Galactic Astronaut Christopher Huie give an out-of-this-world talk, we had a blast at Title 1 school London Towne Elementary School! It was incredibly rewarding to see the light sparkle in each of their eyes--the same as mine a few years ago--as they learned about the various careers they could pursue in the growing space economy. Thank you so much to the Washington Space Business Roundtable, especially Courtney Stadd and Shiv Patel, for your generous support in making this event come to life. We can't wait to keep doing this at more schools across the U.S.! 1st Jamaican astronaut, 19th Black Astronaut, an accomplished aerospace engineer at Virgin Galactic, and first-generation college student Christopher Huie's journey into the aerospace industry is among the most inspiring I have ever encountered. I am incredibly grateful to begin 2025 with my heart full of joy as I continue to connect with wonderful communities across the globe ????! My teachers have played a pivotal role in my journey and encouraged me to think big and chase after my dreams. Today, I had the privilege of paying it forward and virtually speaking to an inspiring educator's, Maranatha Haa's, classroom in Jos, Nigeria! I was inspired by the students' passion, energy, and curiosity as they aimed to contribute to the global and Nigeria's growing aerospace economy in their future careers. Their smiles and excitement reminded me of my younger self; I can't wait to see all that they accomplish! I met Maranatha at the 2024 Space Education Summit I co-organized with Mark Wagner, Ph.D. and Ron Rosano, and I was truly amazed by her work as an educator. Welcome to the 2025 Mars Innovation Challenge! Explore Mars Inc. is thrilled to announce the 2024/2025 Mars Innovation Challenge, open to K -12 students (ages 5-18) worldwide. This challenge, which can be undertaken individually or in teams, centers on developing innovations that help humans thrive on Mars and emphasizes the alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which are vital for life on Mars and have significant relevance to Earth’s sustainability. The Mars Innovation Challenge invites students to engage in cutting-edge problem-solving related to future Mars exploration, with a focus on three key areas: 1) Martian Planetary Protection? 2) Human Medicine & Genetic Modifications 3) Martian Sample Return Integrity Participants should also incorporate exploration ethics and the 7 Generations Principle. This Native American principle urges us to consider the long-term impacts of our actions on future generations—specifically, how today’s decisions will affect people living seven generations from now. The challenge, in collaboration with Thrive Games and their #blockchain game Thrive on Mars, encourages participants to be creative and practical, addressing real challenges for future Mars inhabitants. Aerospace medicine opens a new wave of possibilities to understand human health, and I had the great honor of interviewing one of the leading champions of this field who is paving the way for future aerospace physicians: Dr. Ronak Shah, DO, MBA, MPH, the Aerospace Medicine Director at The University of Texas Medical Branch and former Medical Director at Johnson Space Center! From discussing the current important areas of research in aerospace medicine, pathways to pursuing aerospace medicine, applying to the aerospace medicine residency program at UTMB, and predictions for the evolution of the field, we had an insightful and exciting conversation on all things aerospace medicine for the next generation of aerospace physicians!
