Women have been making STEM history for decades, and their contributions will continue to change the world! It's Women's History Month, so IGNITE Worldwide is celebrating women who have made groundbreaking contributions in STEM throughout history! Next up is Evelyn Anderson, a pioneering biochemist who co-discovered and isolated the hormone ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) in 1933-34, a breakthrough in understanding how the body responds to stress. Born to Swedish immigrant parents in Willmar, Minnesota, she graduated first in her high school class before attending Carleton College and earning her medical degree from the University of California. Anderson led groundbreaking research at the National Institutes of Health, heading the section on Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases. She also championed racial justice — supporting historically Black colleges, lecturing at Howard University, and advocating for integrated neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. In 2021, Carleton College honored her legacy by naming Evelyn M. Anderson Hall after her, recognizing her scientific achievements and lifelong commitment to equity. Earlier this school year, IGNITE Students from Lincoln High School explored Weyerhaeuser’s LEED-certified corporate office on an unforgettable IGNITE Field Trip! The day kicked off with an office tour, giving students a behind-the-scenes look at the workspace and a glimpse into Weyerhaeuser’s forestry operations in the Pacific Northwest. The experience continued with hands-on activities, small group mentorship, and an inspiring panel discussion led by incredible Weyerhaeuser professionals. After the event, one 12th-grade student shared, “It was inspiring hearing the panelists talk about their careers, the paths they took, and how their past experiences shaped them." Washington Senate Resolution 8621 passed! Driving change through policy to recognize IGNITE Worldwide (Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Evolution Worldwide) and Women in Cloud In honor of Women’s International Day, this years Washington state proclamation acknowledges IGNITE Worldwide and Women in Cloud, two organizations dedicated to increasing representation in the technology workforce by empowering girls and women to advance in their careers building innovative products and solutions that change the world. The proposal was led by our amazing Senator Lisa Wellman and yesterday State Resolution 8621 passed! Congratulations on this achievement to Cathi Rodgveller M.S.
