IFAW explores new ways to improve conditions for animals, people, and the place we call home.
关于我们
IFAW explores new ways to improve conditions for animals, people, and the place we call home—and we’ve been leading the way for over 50 years. The problems we confront are urgent, complicated, and resistant to change. Solving them requires fresh thinking and bold action. So we look at the issues from different angles, make unexpected connections, and challenge the way things are done. Partnering with local communities, NGOs, and governments around the globe, we create real-world solutions that make an immediate and lasting impact.

Live from Nairobi, Kenya: IFAW, The Nature Conservancy in Africa, and WWF-Kenya signed a five-year partnership agreement to boost collaboration for greater conservation impact for the benefit of people and nature in Kenya. The tripartite Memorandum of Understanding convenes the different and complementary skillsets from each partner to work together to fundraise, develop, and implement projects that will improve community livelihoods, enhance habitat connectivity, and promote sustainable development. Over the next five years, the partnership will enhance deeper community engagement interventions to secure connectivity of large landscapes and build climate resilience in Kenya. #Partnerships #Collaboration #RoomToRoam

?? BREAKING: In response to declining giraffe populations due to poaching, habitat loss, and climate change, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently recommended federal protections for various giraffe species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). “Giraffes have been moving towards extinction for years, but their plight has gone largely unnoticed. Known as the ‘silent extinction’ giraffe numbers have plummeted dramatically—by up to 40% over the last 30 years—due to threats including international trade in their parts, as well as habitat loss, civil unrest and illegal hunting. The proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act is a positive and welcomed step. Listing the species on the ESA will help giraffes in Africa and examine the outsized role of the U.S. as an importer of giraffe skins, leather, bones and other parts and products. Losing giraffes would be a devastating loss to Earth’s biodiversity. We hope that USFWS will move quickly to finalize this decision and safeguard the future of these species.” - Danielle Kessler, IFAW US Director

These calves are the hope for an entire species! ?? ?? Last year, 20 North Atlantic right whale calves were born, and this year we’re hoping for similar numbers to bolster the diminishing population. There are only around 70 reproductive females remaining, so every mother and calf pair is a critical piece in the longevity of the entire species. The next few months mark calving season, the time each year when whales migrate to the southeast coast of the United States to give birth and nurse their new calves. Follow along as we share updates – do you think we will reach 50 new calves? Drop your predictions below. ??

Every day counts in the fight against climate change. And what gives us the best fighting chance? Nature. The urgency is real and the time for action is right now. IFAW is proud to support this #COP29 Nature Statement: https://lnkd.in/eHHhj-bK

Political Officer at @ifaw EU/BE. I work on EU policies related to marine conservation, maritime transport, wildlife crime, SDGs, and biodiversity.
?? ifaw first conference of the new political term in the European Parliament is coming tomorrow. I'm looking forward to the discussion on the crucial role of the EU in protecting nature by continuing to provide financial and political support to biodiversity. Members of the European Parliament, international experts, local community representatives from Kenya, and representatives from the European Parliament Commission and ifaw will present achievements and explain why it is vital to keep supporting efforts to safeguard nature. Panellists will urge the European Parliament to support nature-based solutions and wildlife protection as vessels for climate change mitigation and adaptation, one of the main priorities in the new EU strategic agenda. Using real examples, we’ll show how investing in biodiversity can help build a greener, stronger Europe. This event is a chance to share ideas, learn from experts, and help shape Europe’s environmental future and role in the upcoming drafting of the new EU budget (MFF). If you have access to the European Parliament and forgot to register, just come tomorrow (20.11) to 3H1 at 16:30, and you will be forgiven :) Jimmiel Mandima, Ilaria Di Silvestre, Barbara Slee, Lionel Hachemin, Mia Crnojevic, Kenan Hadzimusic, Nathalie MERIAUX-CALLEWAERE, John Okandi Kogada, Jürgen Noack

Every species plays a critical role in maintaining balance in the habitats where they live. #DidYouKnow that anteaters control insect populations, create watering holes and even aerate soil and disperse seeds for new growth? Pretty impressive for these solitary and docile creatures! One of the biggest threats faced by giant anteaters in the wild is forest fires burning through and destroying their habitats, leaving animals injured, killed, or homeless. We proudly partnered with Instituto Tamanduá after wildfires burned through 4.5 million hectares of Brazil’s Pantanal region since 2020 to rescue, rehabilitate, and release six giant anteaters who had been orphaned by the fires. The Brazilian Association of Wildlife Veterinarians recently honored their founder and president, our partner, Dr. Flavia Maranda, with a Conservation Award and there’s no better day to celebrate her dedicated work than today – World Anteater Day!

Last week, the Chateau Madelinot in the Magdalen Islands announced it will no longer be offering seal-watching tours, marking the end of all whitecoat seal ecotourism in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This decision closes a significant chapter in Canadian wildlife tourism and conservation. Back in 1987, when Canada halted the commercial hunt of whitecoat seals, IFAW championed seal-watching as a sustainable alternative to seal hunting in the region. Through to the early 200s, IFAW-led ‘SealWatch” expeditions brought media, politicians, and supporters to share the beauty and wonders of the harp seal nursery. Similar initiatives followed in Russia’s White Sea, thanks to our dedicated team at IFAW’s former Russia office. Unfortunately, climate change has dramatically impacted the Gulf's ice conditions. Seal watching tours have reportedly been cancelled in 8 of the past 15 years, with no tours running since 2000. Climate change, and deteriorating ice breeding habitat is having a devastating effect on harp seals. Canada recently revised the harp seal population estimate downward by 40% - almost 3 million animals – a shocking indication of the tragic impacts of climate change. We’re grateful for the years of inspiring seal-watching experiences that raised awareness of these incredible animals and their fragile ecosystems. Amid renewed calls to expand commercial seal hunts and overturn trade bans on seal products, we will not give up our fight to protect this iconic species.
