It's end-of-year reflection time! I was working on a recap from IfThen's trip to SME FABTECH. But, then I started getting bummed out by all the reductionist 'zero-sum' takes on everything from international trade to rap battles. The most exciting moments in history are when humans 'bend the curve' and find win-win solutions to what previously appeared as intractable problems. Got back from FABTECH Expo last week. Unsurprisingly, didn't see many of my additive manufacturing friends but what I did see was super interesting: the rise of the welding robots & cobots from companies like Hirebotics, Path Robotics (announcing a $100M raise at the show), Productive Robotics, LLC and many more. Due to the difficulty in hiring master welders in the US (average age 55), robotic welding is on the leading edge of American advanced manufacturing -- using software technology to make our workers more productive and our manufacturers more competitive on the global stage. Don't fall for the doomsayers who predict a human vs robot zero sum game -- the future is man + machine, ftw!
