?? IESBA Holds Third Firm Culture & Governance Roundtable in Brussels ?? ? Earlier today, the IESBA held its third roundtable on Firm Culture & Governance (FC&G) in Brussels, following recent successful events in New York and Melbourne. The opening session was delivered by our host, Jean-Paul Servais, Chair of Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) and the International Organization of Securities Commissions - IOSCO, together with Gabriela Figueiredo Dias, IESBA Chair. The discussions mark another vital step in the Board’s effort to engage with key stakeholders to explore the crucial role of ethics in firm culture and governance. ? The FC&G Project Team is conducting extensive outreach to raise awareness and exchange views with professional accountants, members of firms of all sizes, corporate governance experts, academics, regulators, and other key professionals and organizations. The feedback from these roundtables will be instrumental in advancing both the standard-setting and non-authoritative material work streams of the FC&G project. ?? A Busy Week for IESBA Global Outreach??? IESBA representatives were actively involved in a series of significant global discussions this past week, each aimed at enhancing ethics and independence in the accountancy profession, and beyond. IESBA Member David W. offered insights and expertise at the The World Bank's CFRR Ministerial Conference in Vienna. His panel looked at the skills gap in accounting, reporting and auditing, focusing on the ethical implications of AI and the need for updated education and training. His focus was on navigating the complexities of current economic pressures and examining AI's risks and opportunities for the accounting profession. IESBA Member Vania Borgerth spoke before the Conselho Regional de Contabilidade de Santa Catarina (CRCSC) (regional council of accountancy) in Santa Catarina, Brazil, highlighting the critical role of ethics in fostering professional integrity and trust. She also spoke before the El Colegio de Contadores de Peru in Peru, where she discussed the International Ethics Standards for Sustainability Assurance (including International Independence Standards (IESSA), the provisions related to sustainability reporting, and the new standards addressing using the work of an external expert in the IESBA Code, new global standards that establish a strong ethical foundation for sustainability reporting and assurance engagements. IESBA Principal Szilvia Sramko participated in multiple webinars this week, highlighting the role of ethics in sustainability standards. She joined IESBA Member Mark Babington at the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR)’s Sustainability Task Force’s session and presented at the PAN AFRICAN FEDERATION OF ACCOUNTANTS’s Workshop for Sustainability Reporting Champions. Additionally, Szilvia Sramko along with Laura Rodrigo Leal (Principal) joined fellow IESBA Staff, Jon Reid FCA (Principal) and Elaine Cahoon (Fellow), leading sessions at the Lesotho Institute of Accountants on separate occasions, each discussing the practical applications of the #IESBACode on sustainability reporting. IFAC has revised the International Education Standards (IESs) to embed sustainability competence across professional accountants' initial training. These important updates ensure that accountants worldwide develop the right baseline skills to implement sustainability reporting and assurance standards effectively. Key Sustainability Enhancements ? Integrated Sustainability Approach ? New Assurance Competence Area ? Strengthened Business Acumen Focus ? Enabling Behavioral Competencies ? Expanded Explanatory Materials ?? “These revisions ensure that professional accountants develop the right competencies to support high-quality sustainability reporting and assurance,” said Lee White, IFAC Chief Executive Officer. ???The IESBA held its first quarterly meeting of 2025 earlier today in New York City. ? The session began with opening remarks from IESBA chair Gabriela Figueiredo Dias. ? The Board's work began with an insightful discussion on the proposed consultation paper for its project on Collective Investment Vehicles and Pension Funds. The project team aims to gather feedback from stakeholders to explore whether the independence provisions and application of the “related entity” definition in the International Independence Standards remain fit for purpose and The findings will be reported back to the Board in a subsequent meeting. ? IESBA Members then received updates on the Board's adoption & implementation (A&I) efforts, including recent efforts to expand A&I of the International Ethics Standards for Sustainability Assurance (including International Independence Standards) (#IESBACode), and specific efforts related to the International Ethics Standards for Sustainability Assurance (including International Independence Standards) (IESSA), IESBA's recently released sustainability standards which create a robust ethical foundation to elevate the quality of sustainability information, fostering greater public and institutional trust in sustainability reporting and assurance.
