A new study led by Penn State University researchers have determined that phosphorus, non-renewable resource and a nutrient essential for sustaining most forms of life that is found in soil, is increasingly disappearing from land as it is washed into waterways throughout the U.S., according to Penn State News. The team published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Nov. 18. Their research analyzed data from 430 rivers across the U.S. and found that this loss of phosphorus could potentially lead to decreased crop yields. The researchers also found that the loss of phosphorus from agricultural lands has increased over the past four decades. The research team includes Li Li, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering and ICDS associate; Wei Zhi, former assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Penn State, currently a professor at Hohai University in China; Jiangtao Liu, a doctoral student in civil and environmental engineering; Elizabeth Boyer, professor of environmental science; Chaopeng Shen, professor of water resources engineering and ICDS affiliate; and Xiaofeng Liu, associate professor of civil engineering and ICDS co-hire. Other authors include Hubert Baniecki, University of Warsaw, and Gary Shenk, U.S. Geological Survey. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/e3ujWZcH J.
