IEEE Smart Village (ISV)?has a unique approach to support the world’s energy-impoverished communities by providing a comprehensive solution combining renewable energy, community-based education, and entrepreneurial opportunities. ISV provides seed-funding to carefully selected community entrepreneurs based upon a credible business plan that will impact significant number of people with electricity, education and jobs. Our Initiatives have transformed countless lives by providing renewable energy solutions, fostering education, and driving entrepreneurship in off-grid and underserved communities. With initiatives spanning Africa, Asia, Latina America, North America, China, South Asia and beyond, the program combines electrification with skills training and the productive use of technology to create lasting change. IEEE Smart Village at the 2024 IEEE PowerAfrica Conference: Advancing the mission of Empowering Communities Through Energy Innovation! The 2024 IEEE Power Africa Conference in Johnannesburg, South Africa was a remarkable gathering of passionate and dedicated minds working toward a shared vision of empowering communities through the productive use of technology. The IEEE Smart Village (ISV) Sessions featured an impactful Entrepreneurship Workshops on governance, partnerships, and resilience to empower community-based energy solutions. We also showcased inspiring ISV-funded developer projects, each one a testament to the positive impact of clean, reliable energy in underserved regions. The week featured keynote presentations from IEEE Smart Village President Rajan Kapur, The Chair IEEE Humanitarian Technologies, Lwanga Herbert, Ifeanyi Orajaka, CEO of GVE Projects Ltd and more. The ISV Sessions also featured exciting presentations from Shantha Bloemen of Mobility for Africa as well as Carl Kies and Moritz Brauchle of Africa GreenTec on a New Rural Electrification Approach - The Repower Project. The Technical tour to CSIR gave the ISV Delegates a practical insights into energy efficiency and energy storage technology. Empowerment Through Enterprise: Solar Cold Storage, Rwanda Africa Development Promise (ADP), led by Monica LaBiche Brown, serves as a catalyst for economic activity in Rwanda, focusing on building strong and vibrant agricultural cooperatives. These cooperatives, owned and controlled by their members, provide benefits to both the cooperative participants and the larger community. KOTMIR Cooperative members faced economic challenges due to the lack of a cold storage facility to preserve their mangos and avocados. Without proper storage, they experienced waste and lost income. Additionally, they were forced to sell fruit immediately upon ripening, often at unfavorable prices dictated by local middlemen. Thanks to the generous support from the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) and locally raised funds, ADP supported KOTMIR in building a cold store and packhouse. Today, during harvest time, members use the cold store for their produce. They rent out space on a per-crate basis during the rest of the year. Notably, KOTMIR has received offers to buy the facility, which they have wisely rejected. Even more encouraging, ADP is now receiving requests from other cooperatives for guidance to build similar facilities.
