? Inauguration of IEEE MTT-S SBC at GECI ? On March 1, 2025, the IEEE Microwave Theory & Technology Society (MTT-S) Student Branch Chapter at Government Engineering College Idukki - India (GECI) was inaugurated at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) during a workshop on Radio-Frequency Engineering. The plaque was unveiled by Dr. Goutam Chattopadhyay, President of IEEE MTT-S and Senior Scientist at NASA JPL, and presented to Dr. Kiran R, Faculty Advisor, IEEE MTT-S SBC GECI. The event was attended by Dr. Chinmoy Saha, MTT-S SIGHT Chair and IEEE MTT-S Region 10 Coordinator; Dr. Rajeev Jyoti, Director (TD), IN-SPACe, Government of India; Dr. Debatosh Guha, IEEE APS MGA Chair; Mohamed Anu, Chair, IEEE MTT-S Kerala Section; and Dr. Sukomal Dey, Chair, IEEE APS Kerala Section. Their presence marked a significant milestone for GECI. Following the inauguration, Dr. Chattopadhyay engaged with students, discussing IEEE’s impact, research opportunities, and career prospects in RF and microwave engineering. ? Inauguration of the IEEE MTT-S Student Branch Chapter at Dr. B.C. Roy Engineering College, Durgapur ? On February 27, 2025, Dr. B.C. Roy Engineering College (BCREC), Durgapur, celebrated the inauguration of its IEEE Microwave Theory & Technology Society (MTT-S) Student Branch Chapter. The event was graced by Dr. Goutam Chattopadhyay, President of IEEE MTT-S and Senior Scientist at NASA JPL, and Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Past Chair of IEEE MTT-S Kolkata Section and Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University. The ceremony began with the unveiling of the chapter nameplate, followed by the launch of the BCREC IEEE Student Branch website. Dr. Chattopadhyay delivered an inspiring talk on the impact of IEEE membership, while Prof. Gupta’s lecture on “Doyens of Communication from Kolkata” celebrated pioneering contributions in the field. Virtual addresses by Dr. Glauco Fontgalland, MGA Vice Chair of IEEE MTT-S, and Dr. Chinmoy Saha, Chair of IEEE MTT-S SIGHT & IEEE MTT-S Region 10 Coordinator, emphasized IEEE MTT-S’s global research collaborations, industry-academia partnerships, and professional development initiatives. Bending the Trend I’m reaching out to ask for your help in reversing the trend in IEEE Microwave Theory & Technology Society membership. Each year, IEEE begins the membership renewal process in August, and members who haven’t renewed by the end of February are removed from the rolls (see the attached figure). Last year, we lost more than 3,000 members due to non-renewal by February! By the end of the year, we were able to recover and finish with over 14K members, but it was a monumental effort. With your support, I believe we can turn things around this year. Please renew your IEEE and IEEE Microwave Theory & Technology Society (MTT-S) membership before the end of February and reach out to at least five colleagues or friends to encourage them to either renew their membership or join MTT-S as a new member. The IEEE MTT-S delegation India visit was an inspiring journey, covering Kerala, Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, and New Delhi! This visit brought together experts, researchers, and students, fostering invaluable discussions on microwave theory and technology. It was an honor to engage with and learn from distinguished delegates, including Goutam Chattopadhyay (President 2025), Maurizio Bozzi (President 2024), Dr. Chinmoy Saha, Erin Kiley and Valentina Palazzi. Through technical talks, workshops, and interactions with budding engineers, the visit strengthened collaborations and encouraged innovation in RF and microwave engineering. The enthusiasm and participation across all locations truly reflected the growing interest in this field. A big thank you to the guests for making this an enriching and impactful experience. I also extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chinmoy Saha for your continuous guidance. Your guidance has helped a lot.
