The Industrial Electronics Society through its members encompasses a diverse range of technical activities devoted to the application of electronics and electrical sciences for the enhancement of industrial and manufacturing processes. These technical activities address the latest developments in intelligent and computer control systems, robotics, factory communications and automation, flexible manufacturing, data acquisition and signal processing, vision systems, and power electronics. The Society continually updates its program of technical activities to meet the needs of modern industry. Field of Interest The Field of Interest of the IES shall be confined to the theory and applications of electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation, and computational intelligence to industrial and manufacturing systems and processes. Our Vision The vision of the IES is to advance global prosperity by fostering technological innovation, enabling members' careers and promoting community worldwide. The IES promotes the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing, and applying knowledge about electro- and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession.

We are thrilled to be first in the world to celebrate IES Day, from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia (+11 UTC). Starting with yummy IES CAKE, Daswin de Silva welcomed everyone with an introduction to IES, followed by Lakshitha Gunasekara providing an overview of IES student activities. Vidura Sumanasena delivered a tech talk on Large AI models and the Transformer Architecture for Robotics. Isuru Senadheera concluded the event with a vote of thanks and plans for 2025. Today is IES Day, November 14th-15th, across the world! IES Day signifying the Society's strategic refresh at the first IECON (successor to IECI 1974-1981) on Nov 15 1982, from "Industrial, Control and Instrumentation of Mini and Microcomputers" to "Industrial Electronics - a multidisciplinary union of developments in artificial intelligence systems, computer control systems, robotics, factory communications and automation, flexible manufacturing, data acquisition and signal processing, vision systems, and power electronics". What an inspiring morning! As President of IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), I had the pleasure of organizing the 50th IECON 2024 Celebratory Panel this morning in Chicago. Thank you IEEE President Elect Kathleen Kramer, VP IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) Fred Schindler, and past VP TAB John Verboncoeur, for joining us and reflecting on mission and vision of IEEE. The panel was moderated by Division VI Director and IES Past President Kamal Al-Haddad, and joined by several General Chairs of IES IECON conferences: Ren Luo (IECON 1996, Taipei, Taiwan), Xinghuo Yu (IECON 2011, Melbourn Australia), Kamal Al-Haddad (IECON 2012, Montreal, Canada), Peter Palensky (IECON 2013, Vienna, Austria), Kiyoshi Ohishi (IECON 2015, Yokohama, Japan), Carlo Cecati (IECON 2016, Florence, Italy), Milos Manic 2018 IECON in Washington, D.C., Luis Gomes (IECON 2019, Lisboa, Portugal). We were joined by the Div. VI representative, President of the IEEE Reliability Society SEC SBC, Steven Li, and representative of Sister Society, President of IEEE Industrial Applications Society Andy Knight. The anegdotes from past IECONs were shared, and ideas for future conferences proposed - from #AI driven interactive sessions, to real-time paper review. Planning a flagship conference like IECON usually takes three years, and deploys hundreds of volunteers. On the eve of IECON 2024, we are thrilled to welcome Caterpillar Inc. as the official industry partner of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Generative AI Hackathon 2025! This partnership builds upon the pre-existing work between Bradley University: Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology, Centre For Data Analytics and Cognition La Trobe University, and the IES. Through this partnership, we will consolidate our contributions towards industrial applications of AI, academic research outcomes, student internships, graduate employability and international research exchange.
