??2024 Student Merit Award (SMA) winner spotlight: Meet Lucia Li of the Rhode Island School of Design! Lucia explores design as a means of communication and education, with particular interest in youth and children’s education, sustainability, and environmental justice. Swipe through to explore her work: ?The Swing-Bag transforms into a portable swing, encouraging kids to embrace outdoor play and exploration. It promotes confidence and active engagement with their environment. ? CareGo is a functional lunch tote designed to support care workers with adaptable compartments and a folding mechanism. It addresses their mobile routines and highlights the importance of meaningful meals in their daily care work. ? Anio Block Toys introduces children to nature-centric systems thinking through sustainable, tactile play. It bridges abstract ecological concepts with interactive learning, inspiring curiosity about natural systems.

Reet Aus PhD exposed the staggering environmental toll of the fashion industry and demonstrated how her UPMADE? certification transforms textile waste into valuable resources, cutting emissions by up to 80%. ?? #IDSAIDEA 2024 winner spotlight: Ad?pt, designed by Zexi Ye of ArtCenter College of Design, received a gold International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the Student Designs category. #IDSAIDEA Ad?pt is designed to improve computer accessibility for people with cerebral palsy. People with cerebral palsy have unique gestures due to involuntary muscle contractions, and every CP user can find a specific point on their hand to touch other objects, regardless of ergonomic situation. That inspired the device’s touch-pad input. Ad?pt also introduces a focus indicator to replace the cursor for navigation; by moving their hand on the Ad?pt device, users can precisely control the movement of the focus indicator on the screen.
