This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Annual Winter Conference in NYC, alongside my brilliant Head of Creative Design and Illustration, Shumita Littlefield! This event was nothing short of inspirational, filled with enriching encounters with dozens of talented authors and illustrators who all share a passion for children's literature. The conference offered a treasure trove of knowledge through creative labs focused on manuscript writing, illuminating workshops on self-publishing, and invaluable networking opportunities with authors, editors, agents, and publishers. It was an immersive learning experience, providing us with insights and tools to further our mission at Idori - to craft educational stories that nurture empathy for our planet in young hearts. Reflecting on our journey, I'm reminded of how Shumita and I first crossed paths. Driven by a vision to communicate the enchantment and beauty of nature and its conservation through children's literature, my freshman year I launched an art competition offering $100 to whoever submitted “the cutest illustration of a monster/alien representing an aspect of environmental sustainability.” Among many talented artists who submitted, Shumita's whimsical style and captivating characters stood out, marking the beginning of what has been an extraordinary collaboration for over two years. Attending the SCBWI Conference with Shumita underscored how far we've come and the boundless possibilities ahead. Her art breathes life into our stories, making the learning journey about sustainability engaging and magical for children. I'm immensely grateful for this partnership and the collective growth we've experienced. Here's to more years of creating impactful stories together and to everyone at the SCBWI for such an enriching conference. The journey of learning and collaboration continues, and I'm excited for what the future holds for children's literature and environmental education. ???? #SCBWI #EnvironmentalEducation #CreativeCollaboration #StorytellingForChange
