Announcement from Bausch + Lomb Surgical announcing a voluntary recall of IOL's in their enVista platform. Great to see the B+L team putting patients and their relationships with #eyecare professionals before profit.
Announcing a recall is disheartening for everyone involved, from the R&D team that developed the product, to sales and marketing colleagues that raise its visibility and – most important – the doctors and patients that rely on it.?It’s also frustrating for shareholders and others with a vested interest in seeing our company succeed. But none of that matters when it comes to patient safety and the trust of eye care professionals. This morning, we announced a voluntary recall of intraocular lenses (IOLs) on our enVista? platform after seeing an increased number of reports of toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS). It’s important to note that 1) TASS is a known complication of cataract surgery and cases do arise with all IOLs, and 2) all reported enVista TASS cases responded quickly to treatment and did not result in removal of the lens. In fact, only a handful involved intervention beyond standard of care. But until we identify and address the root cause of the reports, we’ll keep these products off the market. We believe in the future of the enVista platform, but patient safety will always come first. More details here, including my letter to customers: https://lnkd.in/eUirTrgW. #PatientSafety

?? Living in Florida means sunshine all year long—and that comes with real risks to eye health. Kendall Donaldson, MD, MS Donaldson, #cornea specialist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, shares an important reminder: don’t skip the #sunglasses—especially if you or your kids are active outdoors. UV exposure builds up over time and can lead to serious complications like pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions on the conjunctiva (the white of the eye) or eyelids. In some cases, treatment may require surgery or even chemotherapy. ??? Dr. Donaldson recommends choosing sunglasses with UVA + UVB protection, and mentions lightweight, performance brands like Nike, Oakley, Under Armour, Bollé, and RIA that can also enhance visual performance—perfect for sports like tennis. #UVProtection #EyeHealth #SunSafety #TennisTips #Ophthalmology #PreventBlindness #EyeCareTips #FloridaLiving #WearSunglasses
