The roots of Women's History Month trace back to 1978, when Sonoma County, California, first organized a women's history week. By 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring National Women's History Week on March 8. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to an entire month, recognizing the profound impact of women throughout American history. ? While celebrating achievements, Women's History Month also acknowledges the remaining work, including closing gender pay gaps, increasing representation in leadership roles, combating gender-based discrimination and violence, and ensuring equal educational and professional opportunities. ?
