  • ???? Last week was #WorldKidneyDay, a crucial reminder of the importance of kidney health. ? #Kidney health is important for people living with #diabetes (PwD) and other chronic conditions, as they are strongly interconnected: ?? Diabetes is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease (#CKD) ?? Two-thirds of CKD cases are due to diabetes & #hypertension ?? More than 1 in 3 PwD develop CKD ?? Kidney #transplants can increase the risk of developing #Type2Diabetes ? ?? BUT! If diagnosed early, CKD can be treated effectively and the deterioration of kidney function can be slowed or even stopped. ? ?? That’s why a holistic approach to diabetes and kidney care is crucial – to prevent serious complications and protect people's health. ? ?? Read more about CKD and diabetes: https://lnkd.in/eGUdwwxk

  • ?? People living with #diabetes are twice as likely to experience #hearingloss, due to the damage to small blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the delicate structures of the inner ear. ?? Additionally, high blood glucose levels over time can damage nerves, including those involved in the transmission of #sound signals to the #brain. ?? This World #HearingDay, we highlight the importance of understanding what impact diabetes has on overall health, including hearing. • A staggering four in five adults living with diabetes experience #stigma and #discrimination. Many people living with #diabetes face discrimination at work, often related to misconceptions about their capabilities, leading to some of them being excluded from certain roles, such as aircraft pilots, despite monumental advances in treatment and #management. They can also encounter difficulties when applying for health-related insurance, with some insurers imposing higher premiums or outright denying coverage due to their condition. Discrimination and stigma further affect the mental health of PwD as well as their physical health outcomes. It can also have a detrimental effect on support and funding for diabetes treatment and #research. Diabetes is a complex condition shaped by both genetics and social factors, and managing it demands ongoing effort and careful monitoring. Let’s #standtogether against misconceptions about diabetes and replace judgment with understanding and #compassion.

  • ??Although diabetes is one of the most common hormonal and endocrine disorders, some of its sub-forms fall into the category of #rarediseases. ??Those include #genetic disorders such as mitochondrial diabetes, neonatal diabetes and MODY. ??It often takes long journeys to receive the correct diagnosis of a rare disease, and many of these rarer forms of #diabetes are often misdiagnosed. Due to their genetic or autoimmune origin, they also require highly specialised treatments, which are not easily available. ??More?research is needed to improve the diagnosis of these rare diseases and optimise interventions aimed at?treating them. More people with these rare forms of diabetes should be engaged in #research to address their needs to improve care for all. • ?? WHO Europe released its European Health Report for 2024. ?? Published every three years, these reports provide an overview of the European population’s health status and an analysis of progress towards health policy goals and targets to identify priority areas for action and opportunities for improvement. ?? The new report highlights that while some progress has been made, the European Region should accelerate efforts to tackle urgent health challenges, including improving prevention and care for chronic conditions, which remain a leading cause of premature death and disability. ?? ???????????? ???? ?????? ???????????????? ???????????? ???????????? – ???????? ?? ?????????????????????????????? ????????????????: ?????? ???????????? ???????????????? The WHO European Region has made great progress in tackling noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) – the biggest killer in our region. ? At least 10 Member States have met the WHO target of a 25% reduction in premature mortality from the four major NCDs: cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases. Yet, 1 in 6 people still die from these diseases before age 70. ? Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death, especially in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, while cancer is placing huge pressure on health systems in Western Europe. ? #EHR2024 also highlights key risk factors: ?? The Region has the world’s highest alcohol intake - 8.8L of pure alcohol per adult/year. Men drink four times more than women. ?? 25.3% of adults smoke, and the Region is off track to meet the 30% reduction target by 2025. ? Despite causing 90% of all deaths, NCDs still don’t get the deserved attention. We must tackle their root causes – from tobacco and alcohol use to poor nutrition, air pollution and lack of physical activity. ???????????? ?????????????? ?????????? ???????????????? The trends are clear: our health systems must adapt to meet changing needs. ? Despite record numbers of health workers, they are unevenly distributed. Demand is rising, but supply can’t keep up. An aging workforce adds pressure – 30% of doctors are over 55 and nearing retirement. ? As workforce gaps grow, so does the financial burden on people. Many sacrifice basic needs like housing, heating or education to pay for healthcare, with the poorest hit hardest. ? Health systems also remain unprepared for future emergencies. The average International Health Regulations capacity score is stuck at 73% - no better than before COVID-19. ? Strengthening health systems and improving access to care must be a priority for all. ? ????????????????-?????????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????????? #???????????????????????? #EHR2024 – published every 3 years – is what World Health Organization does best: transforming raw numbers from massive datasets into actionable insights. It identifies trends, uncovers risks and guides smart policy decisions. ? This report will serve as a key evidence-base in shaping the second European Programme of Work - #EPW2 – our health compass for the next five years and beyond that we are co-creating with 53 Member States. ? At a time of increasing social and political divides, evidence-based decisions matter more than ever. #EHR2024 equips governments with the knowledge they need – to develop health policies, strengthen health systems and safeguard lives. We can, and must, do better in working quickly towards #HealthForAll.
